DeSoto LLM win goes to Pierce

by Ken Willis
Marty Pierce of Sanford roared to the checkered flag in the Turner Tree & Landscape Limited Late Models 50-lap feature event at DeSoto Speedway Saturday night. The 17-year-old started third and followed Bradenton's John Shields through 18 laps before passing on the inside to take the lead and eventually first place in the high-powered race. "This is just my second race at DeSoto Speedway," Pierce said. "I've only driven this car in 11 races." Driving clean and steady Pierce stayed ahead of the five caution flags and a hard-charging Jeff Dufresny, who placed second. "I had fun here," Pierce said. "This is my first win in this car. We'll be back." Sonny Hughes of Bradenton took third place. "I have to thank my sponsors," Hughes said. "If it wasn't for them we wouldn't be here. We had a little problem with the shifter and I couldn't get it out of second for a moment. Next time I won't let it happen."

Teddy Nelson of Pinellas Park blazed to the winners circle in the Callaghan Tire Open Wheel Modifieds, staying ahead of a hard-running D.J. Hoelzle of Dunedin who placed second. "D.J.'s a good racer," Nelson said. "He came on strong but he gave me enough room on the outside. We had a good race but I'm still trying to figure the shocks and springs on this thing." Wayne Jefferson of Pinellas Park took third place.

In other races: Clyde Cole of Sarasota took the checkered flag in the Selective HR Solutions Sportsman. Jimmie Best of Sarasota placed second. Pat McGinnis of Bradenton took third place.

Chip Gaines of Sarasota collected the win in the Manatee Lumber Modified Minis. Matt Watts of Dade City placed second. Steve Martin of Pinellas Park took third place.

After 15 years of retirement the father of the racing Huffstutler brothers came back to make his mark and and thank his sons for their help in putting him in the winner's circle.
