Wreckers Get A Workout at New Smyrna Speedway

by Hank Sanders

Modified: First night of the new 4:11 gear rule. 18 cars were on hand to give it a try. 6200 rpm seemed to be about the average max RPM. Tank Tucker in the #15 got the handle on it quickest, and led to the checkers over Tom Root in the red #19. Third went to the #7 of Mark Vandevender who finished in front of Andy Saffioti and Jim "Hoot" Flynn. The gear seemed to slow most of the cars down about 2-3 tenths, but they put on a good show.

Late Model: Earl Beckner in the black #3 sneaked up and stole one! Bruce Lawrennce and Jimbo Bjorkland were battling for the win, but spinning and the resulting flat tires killed their chances of victory. That let the 5B of Jerry Artusio claim second, third went to Robert Andrecheck in the #90, Lawrence drove back to fourth over Dave Love in the #2.

Mini stock: Rick Tumey s great looking #55 Probe crossed the line first in a wreck plagued Mini feature. Conrad Grenier s #01 stormed from the back to knock out second over Ted "Mr. Mini-Stock" Vulpius in the #71. Charlie Staat's Pickup was fourth, and Rick Powell was still running and got 5th.

Sportsman : A massive crashfest. Donnie Miller in the #111 was mercifully awarded the win in a red/checker deal as it appeared the whole field would end up in behind the wrecker if they didn t put an end to it. John Nusbaum s car as killed, as was Russ Antonucci s #46. Doug Samion didn t wreck and was second, first time driver Steve Flinn drove the #90 to third, Bobby Mara #77 was fourth after spinning, and Ian Huffman 3 survived for fifth..Dale Clouser was out with a flat, as was early leader David Gibbs in the #47. 15 cars took the green.

SuperStock: It was a first time win for the #57 of Joe Evans. He was real excited, and the crowd was happy for him. Billy Spade drove a good race and put the 15x in 2d for the 2d week in a row. Ted Helms did a good job too in the orange #61, and was paid for third. Mike Soukup and Jim Winterstein rounded out the top 5.

Super Late Model: Sammy Graham in the Whitehead & Fuller #1 got his first Super Late win as he won the heat and led flag to flag in the feature to take home the winners money. Canada s Bruce Gowland in the #18x battled Marty Zehr s #63 right to the end and came away with second. Fourth spot went to John Kennedy #0, and Ron Decandio #20 was fifth.

Strictly Stock: 1st #33, Scott VanAlstine, 2d, #3 Richard Bolton II, 3d #11 Shane Stacy, 4th #26 Michelle Dyal, and #12 Dave Farmer was fifth.
