Grynewicz Tops Gill in DeSoto Trucks

by Ken Willis
Paul Grynewicz of Hudson took the point and the checkered flag in the DeSoto Speedway Truck feature event Saturday night. "That's no air- conditioned booth out there," said a hot, tired Grynewicz. "It was a tough race, but we're getting it turned around. Now, we may have to start in the back and we'll really get to see what this truck can do."

Grynewicz held the lead throughout the 20-minute race and stayed ahead of the four incidences that brought out the caution flag. On his rear bumper, looking for a chance to pass was Jimmy Gill of Sarasota, and moving up from the 24th starting position in the 26 truck field was James Glover of Pinellas Park.

Although unable to pass, Gill held on to take second in the fast, action-filled event. "We came out with new tires and they didn't work, so we put the old set back on," Gill said. The tires stayed, we got second and that's good. We came out to have fun and we really enjoyed it." Glover, who won the last two truck races at DeSoto Speedway, took third place.

Teddy Nelson of Pinellas Park blazed to the winner's circle in the Callaghan Tire Open-Wheel Modifieds. "After the rule changes we're still working to get it back where it was last year," Nelson said. "I'd like to get it to where I can go from the rear to the front again. I think we're almost there." Rocco Rannallo of Bradenton placed second, and D.J. Hoelzle of Dunedin took third place.

Patrick McGinnis of Bradenton took the checkered flag in a car that's up for sale in the Selective HR Solutions Sportsman. "As much fun as this is I may have to reconsider," said McGinnis who was also celebrating his Irish heritage on St. Patrick's Day. "We may be pulling the for sale sign off after this week." Brian Teeters of Palmetto placed second, and Bill Bathrick of Englewood took third place in the hard run event.

Randy Radley of Bradenton took his first ever win in just his seventh race in the Contemporary Cabinetry & Closet Concepts Pure Stock. "I have to thank my brother," Radley said, who competes against brother, Doug, in the class. "He sets my car up for me and he's been doing this a lot longer than I have. I can't complain." Davis Yahraus placed second, and Brian Ambrose of Bradenton took third place.

Steve Martin of Pinellas Park collected the win in the Manatee Lumber Modified Minis. Matt Watts of Dade City took second and Chip Gaines of Sarasota took third place.

Bruce Sherwood of Bradenton claimed the win in the Comcast Street Stock. Johnny Allen placed second and Chet Roberts took third place.

In the first-ever 5 laps Fan race at DeSoto Speedway, Rob Lankford of Sarasota drove his pick-up to the checkered flag and collected the $50 winner's purse.
