Travis McCoy Pulls Out Hialeah Street Stock Victory

by Marty Little

Danny Maddox padded his late model sportsman point lead with a dominant performance in taking the victory in the 25-lap feature event Saturday night at Hialeah Speedway.

Using a bob and weave move, Maddox zipped to the outside of leader Bob Regula on the second lap and was never headed. Former track champion Billy Barnwell brought his lime green entry home in second over David Weaver, Regula and Stuart Robertson.

Gary Padula appeared headed for a win in the 50-lap street stock special but driveline failure on lap 37 put fastest qualifer Travis McCoy in the top spot. McCoy led the balance of the way for the win by a narrow margin over Rick Lutz. Points leader Mikeal Kohut claimed third money over Wesley Horne and Padula as attrition thinned the 14-car field.

Mini stock kingpin David Russell became the first driver at the track to score three wins this season. Kenny Strong led the first eight circuits before Russell powered to the front and went on to win ahead of Peter Lloyd, Buddy Sizemore, Bill Calder and Tommy Styer.

G.L. Reid inherited the win in the 25-lap cyclone main when apparent victor Jake Reedy could not get his car through post-race tech. Mike Blinko, Frank Kelliher, Steve Dielmann and Bruce Moerlins were next to the stripe.

The 10-lap hornets (kids) feature fell to Billy Harmon over Zane Reid and Shannon Welter.
