"Moose" Alderman Grabs Pure Stock Win at Ocala

By Diana Brake

Ocala Speedway was thundering with action tonight. A full slate of racing and the Chitwood Stunt show kept fans in the packed stands all night. The Junior Cup Cars were first up. Conner Baxley (64) took the lead, but Tyler Holley (82) was able to grab it for one lap. Conner Baxley regained the lead to take the win. Tyler Holley came in second followed by Elizabeth Gentry and Victoria Gentry.

The Coca-Cola Four Cylinder Bombers filled the track. Mike Hillary (9) took the early lead but within one lap, Robert Oxendine (24), Pete Close (89) and Kris Richardson (11) had moved up through the pack to take the lead. A yellow flag flew when the #6 car spun in turn four, directly in front of the leader. Oxendine left the track, leaving Close and Richardson to battle for first. Richardson finally got the lead but it was only with great difficulty that he was able to hold on. The restart after a caution gave Kris Richardson a solid lead that carried him to the wire for the win. Pete Close finished second followed by Joey Durbin, Jeff Oglesby and Darren Dukes.

The WTRS Pure Stocks roared out of the pits. Marlon Durbin (72) lead the first six laps with Frank Buchanan (07), Moose Alderman (7) and several others looking like a six horse hitch they were so close together. Alderman grabbed the lead by the eighth lap and Durbin dropped back in the pack. Later a spin and engine overheating in turn four would take Durbin completely out. Alderman had a strong lead, followed in the distance by Doug Webster (72x), Buchanan and Jamie Dunn (24). Webster began to close on Alderman, but he was never a real threat. Moose Alderman took the win. Doug Webster finished second followed by Roger Brass. After tech, things were reshuffled and Moose Alderman was again declared the winner, but Richard McGlashen was second, Mark Mitchell third, Jamie Dunn fourth and Jack Pate came in fifth.

The Steven A. Bagen Sportsmen filled the track. Bob Mascarelli (72) and Tom Roberts (44) sat on the pole. Mascarelli jumped well and took the lead. A determined Roberts was unable to find a hole to pass through, and Charles Kopach rode easy in third. A caution stopped the racing when two cars spun in turn four. With racing quickly back underway, Mascarelli continued to lead. One lap later, Roberts saw an opening the allowed him to take the lead, and once out front, he began to run away. Tom Roberts finished first, followed by Bob Mascarelli, Charles Kopach, Chris Fadling and Tom Posavec.

The Budweiser Modifieds filled the track tonight. Red Vann (32) sat on the pole and jumped well. A car spun in turn two before the first lap was complete so a full restart was called. Vann again jumped to the front. The pack was tight but it soon parted enough to allow David Baxley (64) to jump into second. These two held solid leads over the rest of the pack and the few cautions never affected them. Tough battles were being fought back in the pack as positions were constantly changing. Eventually, Raymond Vann (99) worked his way into third. Red Vann carried the race from pole to wire to take the win. David Baxley finished a close second, followed by Raymond Vann, Monty Morgan, and Jamie Tinkham

The Ocala Speedway 2001 season will continue with weekly racing. Next week will feature all the regular divisions plus a $1000 to win, Unlimited Pro Figure 8 race. Come out every Saturday night during the regular season for the many exciting features. This is high-action racing fun for the whole family.
