Saldana Big Winner In Opening All Star Sprint Show

Joey Saldana captured his second checkered of the season Wednesday night at East Bay Raceway in the All Star sprint 25-lap feature.

Joey Saldana

It was night one of the 25th annual East Bay Sprint Nationals and a great field of 62 cars was on hand, with Saldana outrunning Danny Lasoski and Danny Smith for the $4,000 win.

Saldana passed fellow Indiana driver and race long leader Smith following a restart with five laps remaining to secure the win. "I rolled the top of the track pretty well," Saldana stated, standing beside his Hemsaw and National Roadside Assistance sponsored machine on Hoosier Tires.

"I ran the 360 show here, Volusia and back here tonight and haven’t changed a torsion bar yet," said Saldana. "The car was perfect."

Smith started on the pole with Rodney Duncan alongside and Saldana and Jeff Shepard in row two. Smith grabbed the initial lead, followed by Saldana and Duncan. Smith remained on top as the leaders entered lapped traffic on lap seven with the order Saldana in second, followed by Shepard, Danny Lasoski, Ronald Laney, Jason Johnson, Greg Hodnett and Tim Shaffer. Following a lap 13 yellow for a Jason Sides and Travis Rilat twin spin, Smith continued to pull away, and held a four car length lead over Saldana and Lasoski, who were waging a war for the runner-up spot.

Saldana lost second to Lasoski just as a yellow appeared on lap 20 for a Sammy Swindell left rear flat. The caution negated Lasoski’s pass, so for the restart it was Smith, in the John Baker Excavating machine with Shaver power on Hoosier tires, ahead of Saldana and Lasoski. When the race resumed, Saldana blew by Smith on the outside in turn one. Lasoski got by on the outside also, but couldn’t pass Saldana, and that’s how they finished, with Laney fourth behind Smith. Shepard was sixth, followed by Hodnett, Shaffer, Gary Wright, up from 12th starting spot, and Johnson.

"These guys are tough," Lasoski recalled after finishing second. "I hand my hands full here tonight."

The K-T Equipment heat went to Lasoski, the JB Enterprise Racing Products heat to Wright, the Crown Battery Heat to Craig Dollansky, the Engler Machine & Tool heat to Wayne Johnson and the final two heats to Paul McMahan and Terry McCarl. Todd Gracey won the Georgia Marketing & Promotions C Main while Jeff Shepard was the B Main winner. Mark Keegan crashed hard in the B, riding the top of the turn one outside wall and flipping. He was okay. Greg Hodnett won the Haulmark fast Dash and Brian Ellenberger pocketed $1,000 in the Strawberry Dash.
