It's time to race!

February 13, 2001

Day Three at New Smyrna

Day three ended much earlier than day 2. Fans got to
leave by ll:00 P.M. which was much earlier than the
l a.m. departure of the night before. But just when you
think it is safe to get into bed just a little early, that old
funny sound of a flat tire on I-95 makes sure that there
is no early to bed.

After a long, dusty day, we sat on the side of I-95 for over
an hour before a nice truck driver stopped to see why this
crazy woman was walking down the side of I-95 at l:00 in
the morning. You know those things we have on the side
of the road called "call boxes" well I called, no one came.
Just as he got the lug nuts loose for us and put on the old
domut spare, the battery went dead. No jumper cables so
we got our first ride in a semi to our house so I could get
my car and jumper cables. If not for this truck driver, I
don't know how long we would have spent on that dark
road. But thank goodness, the truck driver was a race fan
and a racer.

Day three saw Jason Boyd once again take wins in both
the modified division and the Late model division. It was
nice to see some of the Indiana mods back from Lake City
and the Blue-Grey Mod race. I am sure that tonight the mod
field was much bigger but due to very little sleep from flat
tires, they will have to race without me tonight.

The biggest excitement of the night was Dick Anderson in
the #92 and Louie Mechalides (a Busch North driver) fight
for the lead and both end up not finishing the race. Anderson
had the 92 on the wall but was able to get out and told fans
that "he would be on the track tonight, right back in the
shape he was". Mechalides was able to drive his car back to
the pits but this accident caused another which involved Justin
Drawdy in the 12. Drawdy was fine but his car is having a
very rough series. Hopefully for Justin, tonight was much
better.

The 911 Top Cops put on a great show that the fans loved
and also the fans and crews in the pits. With lights flashing,
horns sounding, these police officers put on one heck of a show.
Talking about some excitement, they can give it especially with
those lights just a flashing. They were also on the program
for tonight and I was looking forward to seeing them again,
but lack of sleep won tonight.

The Minis have one more night of hot racing after tonight and
the mini-truck is certainly one to watch. That little thing does
scoot. Seems to always find the front of the pack easily. But
there is still a very good field behind it and the win tonight
and tomorrow night could be anyone's.

The mission for tomorrow night, talking to the NASCAR
Tour Type young lions. There are quite a few of 21 and under
racers in this fast action field and when you say fast, they are.
Do these young lions come from carts or just luck, something
to definitely find out.

As day 4 goes on without me, I look forward to day 5 and seeing
what will happen next. And for that nice trucker, Steve Jackson,
thanks for trusting me to not hijack your truck and helping
us get home. You did alot asking nothing in return except
a phone call to let you know that we were okay. Thanks

Jane Smith
