Dewayne Dempsey Winner In Blue-Grey

By Marty Little
LAKE CITY, Fla. - It became 10 faces in 10 races as veteran Dwayne Dempsey took the lead on lap 95 and went on to win the 10th running of the Blue-Grey 100 for Florida modifieds Sunday afternoon at Columbia Motorsports Park.

With temperatures in the 70s, 25 of the open wheelers chased pole sitter J.F. McClellan around the banked half-mile oval with Dempsey the primary challenger for the first 33 circuits. On lap 34 Eddie Gainey passed Dempsey and began to apply the heat and they stayed in that order until lap 91. At that point Dempsey got under Gainey but a lap later Gary Southard and Gainey tangled and spun with both going to the tail of the field.

On lap 95 McClellan and Dempsey touched with McClellan doing a half spin into the infield as Dempsey backed off to give him room but no yellow flew. At that point Lee Faulk rammed his Ford powered entry into second spot and the chase was on to the checkers. They crossed the strip in that order with Mike Johnson, Teddy Nelson and Gainey rounding out the top five runners. The win was worth $3,000 to Dempsey for an hours work.

The support FastTruck 50 lap feature fell to James Glover over Charlie Barham and Danny Glover while Jeff Prescott copped Saturday nights street stock 50 lapper ahead of Shane Taylor and John Mitchell. Taylor won the pure stock run.
