Mike Orth Winner In Hialeah Street Stocks

HIALEAH, Fla. - In an event that was more a demonstation than an actual race, veteran Joe Winchell nipped Danny Maddox at the line to win Saturday night's 15 lap late model sportsman headliner at Hialeah Speedway.

With but a trio of cars on hand for the first regular program of the season, Winchell, Maddox and David Weaver swapped spots several times with each leading before Winchell took the lead on the white flag lap. Maddox and Weaver trailed.

Street stock action saw defending champion Chalo DeCastro lead early but a tangle between himself and Gary Padula on lap four put DeCastro to the rear. Mike Orth took the lead at the point and ran to the win in the 15 lap main over Mike Kohut and DeCastro.

David Russell proved the best of the mini stocks as he took the lead from Buddy Sizemore on lap 14 and sped to the victory in the 25 lapper. Peter Lloyd claimed second money ahead of Tim Jones, Kenny Strong and Bill Calder.

Roger Pfau led the early laps of the 25 lap cyclone main but it was Frank Kelliher who dominated as he powered to the lead on lap four and never looked back. Pfau kept digging and garnered runner-up money over Bruce Moerlins, Mike Blinco and Heather Lunsford.
