Darryl Shelnut Outduels Anderson For Marion Edwards Title

By Marty Little

HIALEAH, Fla. - In a very heads up move, Darryl Shelnut drove under leader Wayne Anderson on the 90th lap and went on to win the 32nd annual Marion Edwards, Jr Memorial 100 late model race Saturday night at Hialeah Speedway.

Crashes on the first two attempt to get the race under way eliminated contenders James Powell and Mike Franklin, Jr but it was pole sittler Joe Winchell who took command in the early going. Lady Luck smiled on Winchell on lap 70 when he did a solo loop in turn one and got his spot back with track conditions being the official cause of the yellow flag. Fast qualfiier Dick Anderson, who started ninth ran fourth much of the night was in contention until he and Shelnut touched off turn four on lap 79 with Anderson tagging the wall, his night finished.

Wayne Anderson, running second, put pressure on Winchell and the two tangled in turn three on lap 82 with Winchell's mount spinning. Anderson was the new leader as Winchell went to the back of the field and Shelnut took up the challenge of Wayne Anderson. Just eight rounds later Shelnut made his move and they ran to the checkers in that order. Jonny Kay turned in a very steady drive to claim third money over Bobby Coyle, Winchell and Larry Rogero. Rounding out the top 10 was Mario Maresca, Ray Derry, Mario Capone and Stuart Robertson. It was Shelnut's third victory in the prestigeous event, having also posted victories in 1990 and 93.

In the support events, Ronnie Bacelo led all 30 laps for the win in the street stock finale, his first win this season, ahead of Travis McCoy, Gary Padula, Mike Kohut and Ron Wilson.

Young Tommy Styer gained his second victory this season in the 30 lap mini stock headliner with a good drive over Bill Calder and point champ Eddie Lowery while cyclone point champ Roger Bohannon topped that division for this 10th win this season over Heather Lunsford and Roger Pfau.

The 2001 season will wrap up this week (Dec 15) with a special night of specialty events including a school bus firgure 8 race and a huge demolition derby.
