The "Goose" takes Auburndale LLM "Mayors Cup"

by Billie May
With the season over, Auburndale Speedway had their "Fun Night" with the Dash for cash in 2 classes, Enduro, Figure-8, and a Demo-Derby, plus they had the Promotor, J.T. Beard, and the head Flagman Julian Mullis in a dunk tank.

The highlight of the night was the 50 lap Winter Haven Dodge "Mayors Cup" Limited Late Model race, sponsored by Winter Haven Chrysler Jeep Dodge. With 16 cars showing up to take the green flag, it was # 31 Wendell Guy on the pole with # 71 Dave Dunkin on the outside pole, when green flag dropped Wendell Guy took the lead with Dave Dunkin and # 63 Wesley Bass in behind him for 2nd and 3rd, on the first lap the leader spun on his own causing a caution, which put Wendell Guy from the front to the back of the pack.

The restart had Dave Dunkin up front with Wesley Bass, # 56 Wayne Morris, # 15 Bryan Storer, and # 21 Von Pope the top five. On lap two, # 03 Duane Parker and # 50 Tav Gary got together on the frontstretch causing the second caution within 2 laps.

With 14 cars left, Dave Dunkin was still up front # 55 Richard Elkins Jr. passed Von Pope for a spot, then the caution came out again with a pile-up including, # 80 Kevin Boykin, # 5 Jason Bennett, # 44 Tim Gullett, # 25 Billy Norris, # 7 Steve Black, and # 9 Robbie Storer.

Now with just 11 cars in the race, Wayne Morris tried the outside of Wesley Bass but couldn't make the pass and got back in line, while Dave Dunkin was stretching out his lead. On lap 14 # 21 Von Pope pulled in the infield with mechanical problems. Lap 30 caution for debris on the track, 20 laps to go restart Jason Bennett, Wendell Guy, and Robbie Storer battled for the 7th spot, and Wayne Morris was still pressuring Wesley Bass, a bump draft got him sideways and Morris made the pass, the top five on lap 42 were Dave Dunkin, Wayne Morris, Wesley Bass, Bryan Storer, and Richard Elkins Jr. with just eight laps to go, nobody could catch the "Blue Goose" and he went on to take the victory followed by # 56 Wayne Morris, # 63 Wesley Bass (2001 Auburndale Champion) # 15 Bryan Storer, and # 55 Richard Elkins Jr. (Hard Charger Award).
