"Hot "Action on a Cool night at Auburndale

by Billie May
Nice night for racing, cool weather, but "HOT" action on the track, at Auburndale Speedway. Special events were a Lawn Mower race, and the 4cyl Pure Stock Powder Puff.

4 cyl. Pure Stocks were the first to take to the track, this because the girls later on in the evening would be racing these cars in the Powder Puff. With 10 cars starting, # 07 Donnie Guy started on the pole. Action early on with 3-wide racing between # 8 Ritchie Acres, # 68 Davis Purvis, & # 07 Donnie Guy, a couple laps later there was more 3-wide racing with # 8 Ritchie Acres, # 96 Larry Chumney Jr. and # 06 Jared Guy, for a lap or so, then caution # 58 Chris Palmer stopped on the track with mechanical failure. Restart- # 68 Davis Purvis pressuring # 96 Larry Chumney Jr. for the top spot. Lap six # 8 Ritchie Acres pulled out of the race after being up front moving the # 38 Michael Margotta to 3rd. Greg Valdez running in the top five after a bad wreck in his heat race that made his Pinto look like a scorpion. With the laps winding down the field was spread out, but David Purvis running 3rd was getting challenged by Michael Margotta, side-by-side then the # 38 went to the inside of David Purvis but was just short of the 2nd spot. At the line was Larry Chumney Jr. # 96, David Purvis # 68, Michael Margotta # 38,Greg Valdez # 60, & # 27 Dewayne Guy.

Mini- Stocks were the next class on the oval for their feature race, with 16 cars going for the green. # 8 Tim Harman on the pole and # 88 Burt Morse starting outside pole. First green flag start, #55 Chris Hamlett was involved in a spin that took him out of competition early on. Complete restart # 88 Burt Morse took the lead with # 8 Tim Harman following, and # 97 Brian Dorer behind him. Battles in the pack between # 04 Jason Rendell and # 89 Scott Sharpe for the 4th spot, but Jason Rendell was off the pace and that allowed # 7 Jay Kaminski to move up another spot. Lap 14, Points Champion Robbie Storer was up to the 3rd position, with Jay Kaminski and Brian Dorer following, # 9 Robbie Storer went to the inside of # 8 Tim Harman for the 2nd spot, # 8 Tim Harman and Jay Kaminski # 7 battle for the 3rd postion side-by-side for a couple laps allowing # 97 Brian Dorer to catch up with them and join in the battle, but with the leader # 88 Burt Morse having a 1/4 of a lap lead, time just ran out for Robbie Storer to keep his consecutive streak going and Burt Morse took the win, with Robbie Storer 2nd, Jay Kaminski won the battle for 3rd followed by # 8 Tim Harman, and Brian Dorer # 97.

Third feature of the night was V-8 Pure Stocks that started with 17 cars but that was not the case at the ending of this exciting race. # 65 Brian Harbin and # 37 Rob Hockaday made up the front row, on the start # 46 Randy King got a flat tire and fell off the pace, lap 2 had little bits of bacon flying as the # 91 of Rick Bacon lost a tire down the back stretch causing a "red flag". This allowed enough time for the Points Champ # 46 Randy King to get back out after changing his tire and restarting in the rear in 16th place. Restart, 1st through 8th single file until the # 31 Mike Pitts got into # 32 David Holland causing 4th place Holland to spin. Restart again, top three are Brian Harbin, Rob Hockaday and Ron Reed, # 31 Mike Pitts giving pressure to # 8 Ron Reed for the 3rd spot, and # 99 Jason Deaton up to top five, lap 10 another loose tire, off of # 21 Donald Gatlin "red flag". Third restart of the race top 5 still the same, # 46 Randy King up to 8th from restarting in the rear, Jason Deaton takes 4th from # 31 Mike Pitts, and then instantly Mike Pitts slowed, and same lap # 99 Jason Deaton starts to smoke and fell out of the race, moving # 89 Ritchie Acres and # 75 Carl Thompson into the top 5. Randy King moving up in the field got together with # 41 Jammie Dunnahoe, again # 46 Randy King to the rear of the field. Another restart and with 4 laps to go # 46 Randy King and # 75 Carl Thompson got together, with Randy King spinning, He then goes the opposite direction toward oncoming traffic to "get" # 75 Carl Thompson, both exchange sheet metal again and both are "black flagged" for unsportsmanlike conduct. The finishing order was # 65 Brian Harbin, # 37 Rob Hockaday, # 8 Ron Reed, # 32 David Holland, and # 38 Jason Stifle. After post race inspections in tech. # 65 Brian Harbin was DQ for being to light, giving the win to # 37 Rob Hockady, and moving # 08 Glenn Gordon into the top five.

The "Special Events" of the night were the Lawn Mower race, which Jeff MCcaw took the victory. And the 4-cyl Powder Puff. Five girls took to the track trying their hand at this thing we call "Racing". Early battle for the top spot between # 07 Jessica Storer and # 96 Ann King, until they got together coming out of turn 2, letting # 68 Misty Purvis take advantage and moving her into the lead. With only running 5 laps, time was short and Misty Purvis got her 3rd straight Powder Puff victory, with # 96 Ann King coming in 2nd, and a good job by Jessica Storer driving a car with a broken axle (which the driver forgot to inform her of) coming across the line in 3rd with the # 06 Dena Guy, # 27 Nicole Guy rounding out the top five.

With 17 cars, the Limited Late Models were the next feature race. # 5 Jason Bennett starting from the 2nd spot took the lead on the first lap with # 11 David Roberts moving in behind him for 2nd, and # 65 Ollie Harbin into third, Harold Cannon # 3 spun in turn one causing a caution, restart # 55 Richard Elkins Jr and # 65 Ollie Harbin got to the inside of David Roberts to move him back a couple of postitions, under caution again, with Jason Bennett still leading, Richard Elkins Jr. 2nd and Ollie Harbin 3rd, restart Dave Dunkin # 71 moves to the outside to pick up 3 positions, and move up to 4th, and pressuring for 3rd, leaders came into lapped traffic so not much passing able to be done, with # 13 Robert Height not adhearing to the "move over" flag, and eventually "black flagged" for not getting out of the way of the leaders which didn't effect the finish of the race, and # 5 Jason Bennett taking the win, #55 Richard Elkins Jr 2nd, Ollie Harbin # 65, Dave Dunkin # 71, and rounding out the top five was # 31 Wendell Guy.

Street Stocks were the last to take to the track, # 68 Mike Wilson and # 24 Mitchell Large brought the field to the green flag, with 2 complete restarts, # 68 Mike Wilson took the first spot with # 1 David Roberts following, 3rd through 6th positions were side-by-side # 62 Travis Wilson spun in turn 4, and when the smoke cleared # 25 Tim Gullet hit him in the side causing the car of Travis Wilson to be on top of the hood of Tim Gullett, both drivers were OK. after 4 laps were ran with a caution here & there, # 08 Jim Orsich stepped to the outside to try for the second spot, while # 82 Aaorn Williamson did the same trying to get into the top five, with # 97 Sam Cressman doing the same. Eight cars were two-by-two, you could have covered them with a blanket, until they tried it 3 wide and Aaron Williamson and Jim Orisich got together, causing caution both having to restart from the rear, with # 68 Mike Wilson still on top, David Roberts 2nd and Sam Cressman tries the outside again for the lead, by lap 17 he had taken over the 1st spot, caution # 34 Jeff MCcaw and # 24 Mitch Large both into the frontstretch wall, both continued on. Under the caution, # 68 Mike Wilson running 2nd dropped out because of over heating problems, moving # 63 Chris Kingham into the top 5. Crossing the line 1-5 were, # 97 Sam Cressman, # 31 Donnie Harp, #1 David Roberts, Points leader James Wright III was fourth, and # 63 Chris Kingham fifth.
