Cummins and Wright Take “Kids Club” Features at Auburndale

Cool weather and fast action were the name of the game as the “Kids Club” and the Mini-Cup cars were the featured events at Auburndale Speedway this Saturday Night.

The Mini-Cup’s took to the track first. The racing is always tough in these mini “Winston Cup” replica type cars and this proved to be as on the first lap a huge pile up took out four of them leaving only nine cars to start the feature. It was the #17 of Doug Smith who survived to take the checkers followed across the stripe by the #12 of Mark Ross in second and #70 Fred Jamieson took third. Wendy Knapp #05 took the “Future Stars” race.

The Kids Club Junior race saw Matthew Cummins #29 jumped out to the early lead with Dustin Riley#24 and Daniel McClain#11 sliding into the next two spots, but behind them was a heated three-way battle for the fourth spot involving #01 of Casey Howell, #58 Pamela Weaver and the #18 of Greg Harris, the trio battled hard for the fourth spot. But upfront the action heated up as Riley and McClain had caught up with the leader Cummins to fight for the top spot. Riley eventually got beside Cummins and they ran side by side for the final three laps with Cummins being able to hold on for the victory. Riley had to settle for the second spot, McClain came across in third, Greg Harris won the battle for fourth and rounding out the top five was Pam Weaver.

In the Seniors Division it was all the #2 of Orrin Wright who took the lead and never looked back. Laura Weaver in the #36 drove from her fourth starting position to take the second spot, #49 John Cummings and Craig Cuzzone #97 ran tough for the third spot and finished in that order.

The four cylinder Bombers were next to take the green flag and the action heated up early as the cars were going two and three wide for the lead. Michael Margotta #38 eventually took the spot and continued on for the win, Larry Cumney Jr. #96 was second, #63 Donald Gatlin took third, fourth was Ritchie Acres in the #8 and the fifth spot went to #06 of Jerad Guy. Margotta was Dqed in tech., which moved the #68 of Davis Purvis into the top five.

After several cautions and lead changes Robbie Storer moved into the lead of the seventeen car feature in the Mini-Stocks and cruised to his fourteenth feature win of the season continuing his dominance in the class. #7 Jay Kaminiski rolled across in second, third spot belonged to Burt Morse #88 followed across by Brian Dorer #97 and Mike Lawhoen in the fourth and fifth spots respectively.

Points leader in the V-8 Pure stocks #46 Randy King moved from the middle of the pack and roared to the lead on lap twelve easily taking the win. #37 Rob Hockaday, #31 Mike Pitts, #2 George Gorham, #00 Rodney Peterson made up the rest of the top five in that order.

Street Stock action saw several cars fall out do to engine problems including points leader James Wright, but this was not the problem for #63 Chris Kingham who started on the pole and took the feature win. Chris was followed across the stripe by the #12 of David Williamson in second, #08 Jim Orisich took third, Donnie Harp#31 took fourth and Mike Wilson #68 took fifth.

It took two complete restarts before the seventeen Limited Late Model feature was able to get under way and it was Von Pope#21 who started on the outside of the front row sliding into lead. #55 Richard Elkins and the #31 Wendell Guy were racing hot and heavy all race long and the duo were in a couple of altercations one in which collected up several cars but all were able to continue. When it was all said and done Von Poope held on for the trophy and the first place win. Ollie Harbim#65 was second, Wesley Bass#63 third, Elkins was able to hold onto the fourth spot and rounding out the top five was the #49 of Ron Lofquist.
