TIM EWING WINS WINTERSTEIN BENEFIT SUPER STOCK RACE

On a very cold October night, twenty five Super Stocks
came to New Smyrna Speedway to run a 30 lap benefit
race for the injured Super Stock driver Jim
Winterstein. Jim was in the grandstands, in a wheel-
chair, to watch his friends do their best on this
cold, cold night.

On the pole for the 30 lap event was Ted Helmes
No. 61 and winner from last week's Super Stock
race. Helmes gave his entire winnings last week
to Jim and his family. On the outside pole was
Tim Ewing in the #35. When the green was waved,
Ewing shot to the front leaving the #15x of Bill
Spade and the #61 of Helmes dueling for that second
spot. Tank Tucker, usually a modified driver of
the #15, took the wheel of the #17 from Orlando
and was coming up in the field when he had to pit
with a flat and a little fender damage. After
several cautions and a few cars being taken in
from wrecks, Tim Ewing held his lead and won the
race. Top five were:

1. #35 - Tim Ewing
2. #30 - Mike Wiezoreck
3. #00 - John Hodge
4. #50 - Jeff Wright
5. #15x - Bill Spade

It was very nice to see so many Super Stocks come
out for this special race and to help their fellow
racer. Just shows how much we are all family to
each other. More than $2,000.00 was raised from
the raffle on Friday night and the race tonight for
Jim and his family.

On the pole for the Open Wheel Modified feature race
was the #99 of Jeff Anderson but it was the #09 of
Rob Underwood that took the lead and won the race.
Close behind Underwood was the #5 of Jon Compagnone.
Compagnone did a great job of trying to catch
Underwood but tonight, was definitely Underwood's
night to win. Justin Henderson #16 had to pit under
caution for a slightly messed up right side but was
able to continue and come in sixth with Joe Middleton's
#71 in seventh. Both did a great job tonight. Top
five were:

1. #09 - Rob Underwood
2. #5 - Jon Compagnone
3. #2x - Jimmy Wenks
4. #7 - Mark Vandevender
5. #00 - Wayne Southard

In the Late Model feature race, we saw the #43 of Randy
Dye on the pole but it was the #63 of Chris Lawrence
who took the lead and won the race. Mike Murphy's
#26 was taken out of the race from the beginning and
visited the wall on turn 3. Mike was not a happy
camper after that. Chad Pierce, #57, returned after
his hard accident last weekend and did a great job
with a bad handling car. Top five were:

1. #63 - Chris Lawrence
2. #43 - Randy Dye
3. #77 - Brian Bellaw
4. #90 - Robert Anderchek
5. #16 - Bruce Lawrence, Jr.

In the Mini-Stock feature event, it was the #55 of
Rick Tumey on the pole and winning from the pole.
But it was the #6 of David Castello who won the
heat race with a great move, good job to David. The
"Missileman" was driving the "Ice Mobile" of
#8 Trish Gray in the heat but spun a rocker
arm and could not compete in the feature. McPhail
suffered a blown engine Friday night at Orlando
SpeedWorld and Trish gave him her car to race
Saturday night. Top five were:

1. #55 - Rick Tumey
2. #0l - Conrad Grenier
3. #6 - David Castello
4. #71 - Ted Vulipus
5. #81 - Jamie McCague (who drove a very good race)

Because of the Triple Crown coming up next weekend,
only 4 Super Lates were in the feature event. Top
four were:

1. #7 - Mark Vandevender
2. #20 Ron Dicandio
3. #19 Tom Root
4. #00 Victor Almos (Victor is from Pureto Rico and is
a road racer learning the secrets of round
track racing from Southard Racing School)

In the Sportsman event, we got a slight thrill in the
beginning as the #3 went up and over the tires at the
back stretch pit entrance. The car was not hurt too
bad and neither was the driver. On the pole was
the #07 of Ron Lufcy but it was the #111 of Donnie
Williams taking the lead and never even looking back.
Top five were:

1. #111 - Donnie Williams
2. #07 - Ron Lufcy
3. #47
4. #04 - Doug Samion
5. #30 - Dale Clouser

The last feature of the night was the Strictly Stocks
with the #61 of Scott Lees on the pole. But it
was the #27 of Berry Parks who wanted the lead
and took it. Top five were:

1. #27 - Berry Parks
2. #61 - Scott Lees
3. #100 - John (nice job of driving with a broken
left leg)
4. #11 - Shane Stacy
5. #38 - Bob Thombley

Join us next Saturday night when the second leg of
the Triple Crown is run at New Smyrna Speedway.
