Two Nights of Action at Charlotte County

Charlotte County Speedway started the racing weekend on Friday night with the Florida Dwarf Car Federation visiting the speedway to determine their regional championship.

Their first of four heat races started with the #8 of Stan Hope on the pole for the eight lap race. Doug Carrigan in #8z jumped out on the drop of the green flag and held on for all eight laps to take the win. #5 George Landis was a close second with Stan Hope hanging on to take third.

The second heat race started with Mike Landis in #88 on the pole. It was 8x jumping out to take the early lead with Josh Adams behind the wheel to go on for the win, almost lapping the back markers by lap six. #88 Landis came in second with #24 Mark David in third.

Heat race number three had #82 Mike Bellasar on the pole. Alain Paradis in #40 takes the lead on the second lap. Paradis got sideways out of turn two and collected #22 Mark Landis. Both cars retained their position on the restart after track officials determined there was fluid on the track, causing the two cars to spinout. Alain and Mark go on to finish first and second with #6 Andre Gagnon in third.

Heat number four saw the #1J of Daniel Rene on the pole and stay out front for all eight laps to take the win with #68 Brian Paradis taking second and Bob Quick in his #06 for third.

The thirty lap feature for the Dwarf cars came up next with #8Z Doug Carrigan starting on the point. With twenty five cars lined up, it didn't take very long for 8X Josh Adams to take the lead and never let go to take the win. Carrigan came in second with #40 Alain Paradis coming in third.

The Shirley's Bookkeeping Rebel Road Warriors twenty five lap feature with #68 Al Welling on the pole had eight cars lined up. #74 (no name at press time) took the lead on the first lap. #74 and #88 Wayne Wilson went into turn one side by side on lap six, #36 Steven Schroeder was trying to make it three wide but ended up spinning out and causing a caution. #88 and #74 were first and second on the restart with the #36 of Schroeder starting from the rear after causing the yellow, but was back up in the second place by lap twelve. #74 lost the lead to Wilson a few laps back. Steve Schroeder came up from the rear to take the win with #68H John Hanuschik coming in second place and #14 Ricky Gill coming in third.

The Hendry's Mango Maniac Cowboy Cadillacs had ten trucks lined up for their thirty lap feature race with #7 Bryon Maine on the pole. #44 Raymond Tucker jumped out for the lead as soon as our flagman Greg Roeback waved the green flag for the start. #7 Maine couldn't hold off #33 Don Van Acker for very long. Van Acker came around at the end of the second lap to take the top spot. Gene Pack in #2 came up from the outside of row three to take the lead away from #33 Van Acker on lap six. From lap eight to lap twenty three the race was on for second place when #37 Cheryl Weaver moved up from the inside of row four at the start to challenge #33 Van Acker. After driving a hard race to stay in second, Van Acker blew a power steering hose on his truck and ended up spinning out going into turn two with only two laps to go. Gene Pack went on to win the race in his #2 truck with #37 Cheryl Weaver coming in second. #8 (no name at press time) came in third place.

Our Saturday night racing was started with four eight-lap heats for the Florida Dwarf Car Federation Southern Regional Championships. #2 Phil Krauthoff sat on the pole for the first heat, but by the end of the first lap it was #8Z Doug Carrigan out in front. Carrigan held on to take the win with Krauthoff coming in second and #5 George Landis in third. The second heat began with #40 Alain Paradis on the pole. Paradis held position for the win followed by #06 Bob Quick in second and #1J Daniel Rene in third. The third heat got underway with #24 Mark David on the pole. #22 Mark Landis took the lead by lap two with #8X Josh Adams right on his bumper. It didn't take long for Adams to take the lead. He held on for the win with Landis in second and David in third. #68 Brian Paradis had the pole for the final heat and was able to hold position for the win. #92 Tim McLeod came in second followed by #54 Andre Gagnon in third.

The thirty lap Florida Dwarf Car Federation Southern Regional Championships feature race got under way with #8Z Doug Carrigan on the pole, but he wasn't there for long. Fifteen year old Josh Adams in the #8X car moved up quick and was on the pole for a lap two restart after #1J Daniel Rene spun in turns three and four. Adams and Carrigan moved out from the rest of the pack, putting on a good show as they raced for the top spot. The backstretch was lit up by a ball of fire on lap seventeen when the engine of #54, Andre Gagnon's car came apart. He came to rest up next to wall in turn three and managed to get out unharmed, but his night of racing was over. Adams was still in the lead for the restart with Carrigan right behind him in second. When the checkered flag flew, it was Adams and Carrigan coming in one and two, and #40 Alain Paradis in third. #06 Bob Quick took the points championship.

Thirteen cars lined up for the Kix Country 92.9 Sportsman division's thirty-lap feature with #91Kay Jackson on the pole. It took a couple of tries to get this race underway after #39 Phillip Johnson hit the wall on the backstretch on the first lap and had to pit. His pit crew tried to make repairs but Johnson ended up back in his pit before the end of the race. Then #91 Jackson blew an engine on the next restart, bringing out the all volunteer broom crew for a lengthy caution and had to pit for the night. When the green flag flew it was #22 Danny Yates on the pole. Lap three saw #20 George Ellsworth get caught with no where to go but into the wall after #40 Jeremy Goddard spun in turn one. The right front tire of #9 Jerry Bryant went flat in turn three causing a spin and a restart. #92 Mark Evans got caught by the spin but both were able to continue the race. #8 Raymond Jones and #22 Yates were in a heated battle for the lead on lap twenty three, but it was #92 Evans who took the lead. #8 Jones, #92 Yates, and #20 Ellsworth got in a tangle on the front straightaway on lap twenty five, bunching up the pack for a restart. #92 Evans had the pole for the restart, and held it to take the win with #22 Yates in second and #8 Jones in third.

When the green flag dropped for the Lee's Auto Repair Road Warriors' twenty five-lap feature, #11 Robert Hendry was on the pole. #9 Gary Miller dominated the race after taking the early lead on the first lap. Miller was still in front for the lap six restart, after #15 Clint Snyder and #98 Danny Ryder did a little spin. The whole time #61 Chris Oncken was making his way up from the back of the pack. Another caution on lap twenty two bunched up the field for a three lap dash after #15 Snyder hit the outside wall of turn two. #9 Miller held on to take the checkered flag. #1 Jesse Gargus came in second and #61 Oncken rounded out the top three taking third. Gargus was disqualified in tech, putting #61 Oncken in second and #28 Joe Bossey in third.

Eighteen cars lined up for the Budweiser Open Wheel Modified fifty-lap Six Pack Race #5 with #99 Doug Moff on the pole. #76 Hank Peters spun on lap two for the first caution of the race, then #57 Timmy Moore spun with the help of #71B Bart Corlieto, who went to the rear for the restart. The field of cars made their way around #5 James Wilkins and #80 Chris Dean when they got together on lap nine. Dean was able to continue racing, but Wilkins was later helped to the pits by the Prompt Towing Wrecker Service. Moff had held on to the first place position until lap nineteen when #95 Chris Turner took the spot. Lap thirty six saw some hard racing for fourth place between #93 Steve Duerr and #25 Scott Kleiber, then they were fighting over third until lap forty eight when the yellow flag flew. #57 Moore was running in forth place when he hit the wall on the backstretch, ending his night in the pits, and setting up a two lap shootout for the checkered flag. #95 Turner had held first place since taking it on lap nineteen, but dramatically dropped off the pace on the last lap. The drivers fanned out to make it to the finish without hitting Turner, and #99 Moff crossed to take first place. #93 Duerr took second and #25 Kleiber came in third.

The Big Wheels Mini Stock twenty five-lap feature had #19D Dale Dean III on the pole, but by lap six #94 Keith Risinger had taken the top spot. #56 Brian Richardson had moved up from the back of the pack to take over third place by lap nine, putting #31 Harlan Wilson in forth. #19D Dean broke on lap eleven and slowed down on the track bringing out the caution. #94 Risinger was still out in front for the restart, and was still there when #1 spun on lap seventeen bringing out another caution. #94 Risinger held on to take the win. #56 Richardson moved up to take second place and #31 Wilson came in third.

It was a true race fan's weekend of racing satisfaction at the home of "Southern Thunder".
