WAYNE REUTIMANN WINS CRASH SHORTENED DESOTO FEATURE

On the 23 lap of a great Desoto Feature Matt Mercer who had lead the race for many laps and was now running fourth evidently had a throttle hang going into turn one and crashed hard straight into the wall. The car with Mercer unconscious continued sliding against the wall into turn two where it burst into flames.

With the fire out they worked on getting him out of the car. After evaluation by the paramedics on scene it was decided to airflight him to Bay Front Hospital in St Petersburg. Since all equipment had to be cleared for the chopper it was decided the race was Official with Reutimann being declared the winner from his tenth starting position.
