There is a phenomenon that occurs in the central part of Florida during the summer months where the east and west coast seabreezes meet during the late afternoon and evening producing heavy rainshowers and sometimes violent thunderstorms. Lately, it seems these seabreezes shake hands every Friday evening directly over Orlando SpeedWorld and it happened again Friday as officials were forced to postpone the show following almost an hour of heavy rain.
Track promoter Don Nerone waited as long as he could before calling the program, even meeting with drivers in the Super Late Model and Modified divisions to get their opinion. It was finally decided that the grounds were too wet and track conditions too dangerous to attempt running the show.
The pit area was full of disappointed racers including drivers like 911 racer Bob Hart of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office who has been rainned out of his shows with the racing cops from around the state most of the summer. The 911 drivers were hoping to help the speedway raise money for the September 11th Fund which is going to support the families of Policeman and Firefighters who lost their lives in the World Trade Center attack.
Attention is now focused on next weeks show which will include the South 40 Motorsports Classic Auto Racing Series, another group that hasn't raced in over a month due to weather.
Since July 1st, Orlando SpeedWorld has only been able to complete three racing programs. The Super Late Models have run only one regular points-paying race since July 8th!!!!
