| WELCOME TO SPEEDWEEKS 2002 | By Jane Smith
Fans from all over the country will soon be winging their way towards Central Florida and Speedweeks 2002. Daytona will be booming during the daytime but what does a race fan do at night. Well, depending on whether you like dirt or asphalt, local short tracks will offer a variety of racing for that never tired Daytona fan.
East Bay Raceway opened its racing on January 30th and continues on with the King of 360 Nationals thru Feburary 2nd. The Late Model Winternationals (STARS) will be on February 4th, 5th and 8th. UDTRA takes to the track on February 6th, 7th, and 9th. Then it is the Open Wheel Modifieds Winternationals on February 10th, 11th, and 12th. Topping off East Bay's events will be the All Star Sprint Winternationals on February 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th.
Putnam County, also a dirt track,located in Satsuma, Florida will start their racing on February 1st and 2nd with Super Late Models. Friday night will be $4,000 to win with Saturday night $3,000 to win. Entry fee is $100 with $200 to start paid on Friday night and $300 to start on Saturday night. Then on February 6 it is All Star Sprints with a $5,000 to win purse.
February 7 will see the DIRT Modifieds out for practice with racing on February 8th and 9th. Then we come back to Putnam on February 13th and 14th for Limited Late Models and 1200 cc Mini Sprints and Open Wheel Modifieds. The ASCS Sprints will race on February 15 and 16 along with the Open Wheel Modifieds. For more information, call Putnam County Speedway at (386) 649-5210.
DeSoto Speedway will host the Legends Winter Nationals on February 11th thru 15th. Practice will be on February 10th from noon to 5 p.m. Racing for the Legends will be from 12 to 5 each day. On February 15th, there will be open practice from 6 to 10 p.m. for the SARA Late Models, Outlaw, and Sprints. February 16th will see Sprints, Outlaw, SARA Late Models, Pure Stock, Mini-Stock, and a World Championship Bus Figure 8 race. Racing will began at 6 p.m.
Volusia Speedway Park will host the National Late Model, All Star Sprints, U.M.P. Super Late Model, Northern D.I.R.T. Modifieds, and U.M.P. Open Wheel Modifieds. Racing will begin each night at 7:30 p.m.
The World Series of Asphalt Racing at New Smyrna Speedway will kick off on February 8th. Their schedule is as follows:
2/8 Super Late Models, NASCAR Type Tour/SK Modifieds, Late Models, FL/IMCA Modifieds, Mini-Stock Qualifying begina at 3:00 P.M.
2/9 Super Late Models, NASCAR Type Tour/SK Modifieds, Late Models, FL/IMCA Modifieds, Mini-Stock, Super Stock Qualifying begins at 4:00 P.M.
2/10 TBARA Winged Sprints, NASCAR Type Tour/SK Modifieds, Late Models, FL/IMCA Modifieds, Mini-Stock, & 911 Racing Qualifying begins at 4:00 P.M.
2/11 TBARA Winged Sprints, Super Late Models, Late Models (50 lap) FL/IMCA Modifieds, Mini-Stock, 911 Racing & STARRS Qualifying begins at 4:00 P.M.
2/12 Super Late Models, NASCAR Type Tour/SK Modifieds, Late Models, FL/IMCA Modifieds (50 lap), Mini-Stock, STARRS Qualifying begins at 4:00 P.M.
2/13 Super Late Models, NASCAR Type Tour/SK Modifieds (50 lap) Late Models, FL/IMCA Modifieds, Sportsman & Strictly Stock Qualifying begins at 4:00 P.M.
2/14 Super Late Models (50 lap), NASCAR Type Tour/SK Modifieds, Late Models, FL/IMCA Modifieds, Sportsman Qualifying begins at 4:00 P.M.
2/15 Super Late Models, NASCAR Type Tour/SK Modifieds (l00 lap) Late Models, FL/IMCA Modifieds, Sportsman & Allison Legacy's Qualifying begins at 4:00 P.M.
2/16 Super Late Models (100 lap), NASCAR Type Tour/SK Modifieds, Late Models, FL/IMCA Modifieds, Super Stock & Allison Legacy Qualifying begins at 4:00 P.M.
Pit Admission will be $25.00, general admission will be $25.00 with children 11 and under free.
And if you have not had your fill of racing yet, there is the new Florida Winternationals at Orlando SpeedWorld from February 19th thru 23rd. This event will showcase midgets, returning to Florida for the first time in a number of years, Dwarfs, Legends, Mini-Stocks, Super Stocks and Classic Cars on the final three nights. General admission will be $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for teens, 12 and under free. Pit admission will be $25.00. Pits will open at noon and racing will begin at 7:30 P.M. nightly
Fans should have plenty of racing for the month of February whether it is dirt or asphalt. Just be sure to take plenty of vitamins because the excitement and thrills will be plenty.
