Fox Grabs 100 Lap Charlotte Late Model Win

By Claude Lewis

Randy Fox is officially back in the groove again. He confirmed that by cruising to victory lane in Saturday nights Limited Late Model 100 at Charlotte County Speedway.

Fox, who was on fire during the summer at the Punta Gorda paved oval but had cooled off in early fall, collected $2,000 for his win in the No. 88 Bruno Concrete.

It took a daring move by Fox on lap 54 to cement the win.

Wayne Morris had held the lead from lap 1, but Fox had worked his way up from the seventh starting position to put the pressure on the 56 car.

Fox raced side by side with Morris for 10 laps. In turn one on lap 54, they came up on the car of Todd Cooper, who was about to go down a lap. It appeared Cooper would block Fox high, but midway through the turn Fox squeezed between the two cars to take the lead.

From there, Fox checked out on the field, winning by more than half a lap. Morris held off Richie Anderson for second. Mike Hovis was fourth and Steve Arnold fifth.

Anderson was the hard charger, moving up from a 12th-place starting position.

We went three wide and I saw a little opening, Fox said. It was win, lose or draw. I worked hard outside and I wasnt going to back out. I said the hell with it, its now or never.

Fox, who won a regular feature the previous week, believes his team has the problem figured out. Fox had slipped to second in points but regained the points lead with Saturday nights effort.

We thought it was the chassis, but it turned out to be the carburetor, Fox said.

Hard luck awards went to Glenn Morris and Chris Turner, who wrecked on lap 74 trying to get around Wayne Morris.

Glenn Morris had won the last two 100-lappers at CCS, but had nothing for Fox.

The limited late models qualified Friday night. They ran four-lap sets. Fox was fastest at 61.973 seconds. Glenn Morris was second quickest at 62.273.

There was also a 50-lap race for road warrior Friday night. Clete Trimmer of Fort Myers put on quite a show, coming from the back to the front twice to take checkers. Bob Waltz of Cape Coral was second. There were four support divisions Saturday night.

In the street stock 25-lapper, Brian Richardson of Fort Myers had enough to win by five car lengths over Port Charlottes Terry Price. Mark Collins of Cape Coral took third when it was ruled that Randy Miller spun David Fischer on a last-lap wreck.

The outside groove paid off for Port Charlottes Cheryl Weaver, who won the thunder trucks feature. Weaver sat outside John Garrett for 14 laps. With two laps to go, a suspension part in Garretts 22 truck gave way, allowing points leader Weaver to claim victory. Justin Bryant of Arcadia took second and Garrett limped home third.

The pure stock feature saw the VanDevender brothers bash into each other on lap 12. Older brother Stuart was shaken up a bit and the No. 36 car he drives was damaged. Billy was able to continue and place second. The top spot went to Wayne Wilson of Fort Myers. Dennis Hale of Punta Gorda was third.

The outlaw modifieds were a guest class, running a 25-lapper. Don Hopper, the No. 2 man in points, was the winner. Raymond Jones of Arcadia was second. Christy Boyette on Punta Gorda took third.

This coming Saturday night, the TBARA winged sprints return to Charlotte County Speedway.
