Up until a couple of weeks ago, racing was a fading memory for Doug Heveron.
But when he got a call from sprint car owner Don Heckman, Heveron decided to climb behind the wheel and give it a go.
The choice was a wise one. Heveron checked out on the field in Saturday night's Tampa Bay Area Racing Association's 25-lap feature for winged sprints at Charlotte County Speedway.
"This was only my second race this year," said Heveron, who replaces Wayne Reutimann Sr. in the No. 22 car. "It's a good ride. It's probably the only ride I would have taken."
Heveron, now 41 years old, has raced since he was a kid. He was good enough to run Indy cars and took a few greens in the NASCAR Busch and Winston Cup series back in the '80s.
Until recently, Heveron was content running his own business in Jensen Beach.
"I was just working," he said. "Don gave me a call. It looks like I'll be in the car next year."
A total of 21 cars took the green flag in Saturday's feature.
Heveron passed Todd Schmidt's 96 car on lap 11 and walked out to a big lead before a caution with four laps to go tightened the field. The biggest problem for second-place Shane Butler was the lapped car of Chuck Klausing wedged between him and Heveron on the restart. It helped Heveron win comfortably.
Butler took second and padded his points lead over older brother Keith, who was caught up in some contact with Wayne Reutimann Jr. and Wendy Mathis on lap 3. Keith had to settle for a 19th-place finish.
Schmidt was third, David Steele fourth and Dude Teate fifth.
Steele is fresh from racing the Silver Crown Series up north. He was second in points in that series.
Steele, now 28, began racing as a teenager with the TBARA and graduated to full-time rides on the USAC sprint and midget series. He also ran a few NASCAR Busch Series races in 2000.
With the USAC season over, Steele is back racing with the TBARA. He will be at Charlotte County Speedway when the sprints return Nov. 9.
There were five regular stock car divisions also racing Saturday night at CCS.
In the limited late model 35-lapper, Randy Fox took the lead from Karo Vaughn early in the race and was able to keep a safe lead over runner up Glenn Morris. Chris Libak passed Jeff Dufresne on lap 31 for third.
Raymond Jones of Arcadia led from wire to wire in the 25-lap street stock feature. Ralph Goddard was second and Scott Kleiber third.
Scott McDaniel won the 25-lap pure stock feature. Punta Gorda's Dennis Hale held off Stuart VanDevender for second. Billy VanDevender was fourth.
It was an Englewood thing in road warrior, as the top two drivers call the western Charlotte County community home. Teenager Brandon Anderson was first by a healthy margin. Chris Huntoon grabbed second. Jim Kacynski Jr. was third.
Port Charlotte's Cheryl Weaverreturned to victory lane in thunder trucks. John Garrett was a close second and Mike Bialecki a distant third.
There will be racing this coming Friday and Saturday at CCS. On Friday night, there will be a 50-lap road warrior race and qualifying for Saturday night's 100-lap limited late model race. Admission is $20 a carload Friday night.
