Bresnahan Wins Second Leg of Triple Crown at Citrus Co. Speedway

by Larry MacMillan
Inverness, Fla - Despite the ever-changing surface, a
week of rainy weather and rain shortened practice time,
Mike Bresnahan has managed to find the right groove to
dominate the big money races at Citrus County Speedway.
He logged his fourth big money race of the 2002 racing
season Saturday night when 20 of Florida's best took
the green flag in the 2nd leg of the Triple Crown
Series. Citrus is the shortest of the three Triple
Crown venues and after Lakeland USA International this
was short track racing at its best.

James Powell III took fast qualifying money turning a
13.715 second lap. Bresnahan picked up second money
at 13.722, while ten other drivers managed to qualify
in the 13 second bracket on what was a very green race
track after rain washed any build up of rubber on the
track from Friday night's practice session that was
2 l/2 hours late in getting started because of rain.
The pill draw put the top five in inverted order with
B.J. McLeod on the pole, Dickie Anderson outside pole,
Michael Williams inside row two with Bresnahan starting
fourth and Powell starting fifth.

When the green dropped for the 125 lap main event,
Anderson rocketed to the point and McLeod and
Bresnahan fell in behind him. It only took nine laps
for Bresnahan to move around McLeod and take advantage
of Anderson's lose racecar to take the lead. From
that point on, Mike set the pace and was successful in
keeping everyone except fast qualifier James Powell III
who moved around Anderson in lap 22. Bresnahan managed
good solid resarts after a half dozen caution periods
and one red flag condition brought on when David Rogers
nailed the front stretch wall and rode right off turn
one into the pit area. Rogers walked away from the
wreck but his car suffered extensive damage finishing
his night.

The final caution came at lap 112 with caution counting
to lap 115. The final ten laps were run under green
and Bresnahan went on to take his second trip to Victory
Lane in two weeks in big money races at Citrus. He
took a $3,000 win last week and pocketed $5,000 for this
week's win. James Powell took second followed by Dick
Anderson, Jeff Scoffield, who started tenth, and Rich
Pratt to found out the top five. Jay Middleton managed
to move from 13th to finish sixth and rounding out the
top ten were David Froelich, Jonny Kay, Tom Haselmayer,
and Mike Faulk.

Fans were also treated some extra excitement with the
Sportsman main going to J.D. Goff, taking his first
win of the season. Kathy Ray won the barn burner of
the all fature night of racing outrunning Corky Miley
and point leader Travis Nichols for her very first
Street Stock win over a 22 car field. Starting from
the rear of a 21-car field Richie Smith made it two in
a row and win number nine in the Hobby Stock 25 lap
main. Mini Stock point runner up Rob Wheatley managed
to move from his 9th starting spot to take his fourth
win of the season. Todd Downs moved from his 13th
starting spot to a lap 20th lap pass on leader Robin
Bauer. Stuart Madison and Robert Jordan to take his
fourth win of the season in Thunder Stock action.

Next week will be a full schedule of all six regular
divisions plus it will be Autograph night during
intermission on the front straight for an opportunity
for the fans to get up close and personal with their
favorite drivers.
