Citrus Late Models Go After Triple Crown 125 Saturday

By Larry MacMillan

Dickie Anderson returns to Citrus County Speedway, a race track he and wife Mary operated for a couple of years, to face off and defend his point lead in the Sunbelt Series as Citrus County Speedway hosts the second leg of the Triple Crown in a 125 lap Late Model race for $5,000 to win this weekend.

Anderson will not have the home track advantage that one might think he would have due to the new 3/8th mile configuration expansion. Dickie has never had a real chance to run at Citrus in competition after two attempts previously this year went sour before he could even get the green flag.

The Florida King of the short tracks will have some pretty heavy hitters to face in this 125 lap Sunbelt Series race for the crown with his son Wayne Anderson, James Powell III, new comer Aric Almirola, Scott Grossenbacher, B.J. McLoad, Mike Franklin, David Rogers, Scotty Crockett, Daniel Keene Sr. & Jr., Scott Grossenbacher, Jonny Kay, Mack Johnson, Lee Faulk plus popular locals.

Mike Bresnahan tucked away his third 100-lap big money race last Saturday and would certainly like to repeat for a four-bagger.

Defending track champion Herb Neumann is also expected to represent the local hot shoes along with Danny Johnson, Tate Pierce, Herb Hoefler, Al Lawrence and point leader Rex Struble.

Certainly there will be some surprise drivers showing up to try to qualify for the 24 to 26 starting spots. Practice sessions will begin at 2 p.m. Qualifying time trials will get underway at 5 p.m. Saturday evening. Should Mother Nature rain on our parade, the rain date for the race is Sunday afternoon.

Added to the program will be the Sportsman, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks and Thunder Stocks in an all feature evening of action.

There will be an open practice session on Thursday night from 5 to 9 p.m. and a Late Model only practice on Friday night from 5 until 10 p.m.

Citrus County Speedway is located on the West Coast in the geographical center of Florida, 2 miles south of Inverness on U.S. 41 at the Citrus County Fairgrounds, next to the Inverness Airport. Citrus County Speedways 3/8ths mile is quickly becoming Floridas short track Late Model capitol.
