Howell Tops S.A.R.A. DeSoto 100 Lapper

By Rick Anges

Bradenton,Fl. - A hard rain fell during qualifying for the Southern Automobile Racing Association one hundred lap feature event Saturday night at the "South's Fastest Short Track", but after quick work by the track crew it was Larry Osteen #22 taking fast time with a low fourteen second run.

With the roll of the die the first four row were inverted and Edward Howell in the Rick Wilsom owned #62 Timber Wolf machine sat on the point. On the outside was the #75 of "Bub" Marty Pierce on the outside. Pierce has been dominant on the high banks of late and looked for a good run this nite.

When the green dropped it was Howell who jumped out to a goood lead with Pierce holding onto the second spot. Behind the leaders the rest of the twenty one car field was battling for position.

Osteen and Wayne Morris #56 with the #29 of Bobby Beauchemin were having a war of their own as they swapped positions lap after lap, door handle to door handle. As the trio came out of turn four Osteen got into Morris sending the #52 car into the front stretch wall.

Most of the rest of the field was able to get by but Brian Hollfield #31 who had a good run going slammed hard into the stalled machine of Morris. As the smoke was clearing and it appeared the wrecking was over #26 of Dan Crowe came out of no where and crashed hard into the wreck.

All the drivers were able to walk away from the wreck but the cars suffered heavy damage including Osteen who suffered heavy rear end damage. Morris had some choice words with Beauchemin during the red flag for clean up.

It looked like the only car that could catch Howell after the green fell again was Pierce but a late race spin and then a stop on back stretch that garnered him a black flag ending his night ended his bid for the win.

From that point on it was all Howell taking the victory over points leader Steve Adorer #10 who came from near the rear on the field for the second spot, third went to the #67 of Chad Allman, fourth was the #8 of Keith Lilley and rounding out the top five #60 of Brent Oneil.

Open Wheel Modified
Dennis Wilson jr.#42, who has for years dominated in the street stock class taking both the the championship and the Florida Street Stock 100 in the last few years walked away with the 35 lap feature. Wilson took the lead early and never looked back leading by as much as a half a lap at some points. After the race Dennis said " I think we finally have the bugs worked out, this car was really hooked up. I want thank all my sponsors and especially Dad."

The #5 of Ronnie Campbell showed some strength and brought his ride home to a solid second place finish, #15 Bill Davis raced his way through the field and took the third spot with the #80 of Chris Dean fourth and Rocco Ranallo #67 fifth.

Street Stocks
Long time DeSoto Speedway racer Jimmy Best in the familiar #67 made his come back in style and took the win over a good field of Street Stocks including Chet Roberts #69 who ran out of laps battling his towards the leader and taking the second spot. Sue Purrington #8 showed she was on the come back trail after early season woes finishing third. Todd Wozniak #10 took the fourth spot by a nose piece over the #27 of Johnathan Hiedenthal. Matt Scheffler #10x who has really had a good run of late NASCAR grenaded a motor mid-way through the race.
