Leo Musgrave Memorial This Weekend at Sunshine Speedway

by Jane Smith

Can anyone name the place and the year that Jimmy Cope and his brother Mike Cope both won a Late Model race at the same track, on the same night?

Give up; it was 1989 and the 6th running of the Leo Musgrave Memorial at Sunshine Speedway in Pinellas Park.

Leo Musgrave was the owner and operator of Sunshine Speedway, a l/4 mile oval track in Pinellas Park that once was part of the biggest dairy farm in Pinellas.

Dwayne Dempsey, 1999 Leo Musgrave Memorial winner and Sunshine Speedway owner Bonnie Hill.

Like the movie "Field of Dreams", Musgrave "built it and they did come."

Since l984, the Leo Musgrave Memorial has run. This year Saturday, June 29th will be the closest Saturday to his birthday and the perfect day for his memorial. Many drivers have come to the annual Memorial and tried their best to win the trophy that means so much to Late Model racers. This year will be no exception.

Winners of the Leo Musgrave Memorial have been:

1984 Dave Breakfield
1985 Dave Breakfield
1986 Jimmy Cope
1987 Jimmy Cope
1988 Jimmy Cope
1989 Race was run as Twin 50's Jimmy Cope won first 50 and Mike Cope won 2nd 50
1990 Dave Dunkin
1991 Jimmy Cope
1992 Dwayne Dempsey
1993 Jimmy Cope
1994 Johnny Stanford
1995 Mike Franklin
1996 Dave Pletcher
1997 Dwayne Dempsey
1998 Sam Coghill
1999 Dwayne Dempsey
2000 Dwayne Dempsey
2001 Jeff Scoffield

Frank and Bonnie Hill now run Sunshine Speedway. Leo Musgrave was Bonnie's dad and this is a very important weekend to her as she and the fans and drivers of Sunshine Speedway remember who it was that built their track.

On Saturday, June 29th, Sunshine Speedway honors "the man who built it and they came" Leo Musgrave.
