Florida Late Model Triple Crown Update

By Jack Smith

Citrus County Speedway in Inverness, Florida is now the place for the second leg of the Florida Triple Crown, one of the Super Late Model gems in the Sunshine State.

Practice for the race will be on Friday the 2nd of August, and on Saturday the 3rd of August the power packed racecars will hit the Citrus asphalt for a 125 lap, $5,000 to win event.

Don Nerone, who runs the FASCAR sanctioning body, has announced the first leg of the Florida Triple Crown will now be run at USA International Speedway on July 20th, a 200 lap $5000 to win event.

"Don Nerone needed some help and we hope this helps everybody", stated Citrus promoter Billy Hooker. "My goal is to make it possible for these guys to afford to keep racing, it'll work out for everybody".

The third leg of the Triple Crown is also the 37th annual Florida Governor's Cup 200 running on November 9th at New Smyrna Speedway. The Governor's Cup is the crown jewel of Florida's Late Model racing and is the one every late model racer wants to win.

The overall points winner for the Triple Crown picks up an extra $3000 prize in addition to being in the FASCAR Winner's Circle program with thousands of dollars in extra bonuses such as free tires, waived entry fees and more.

FASCAR still plans to run an event at Charlotte County Speedway when the legal wrangling is worked out.

Don Nerone said he will not run more than 12 Sunbelt Late Model races, but if the Charlotte County issues are resolved, he will move one of his other dates there later in the year.

The Charlotte County Speedway situation will not affect either the Triple Crown or the Governor's Cup.

Last year's Triple Crown overall winner was Travis Kittleson.

This schedule for the triple crown gives race fans three different types of tracks to see the best drivers test their skills.

Citrus is a tough and tight banked oval and with the widening of the backstretch makes for some fast, fender banging racing to keep the race fans on the edge of their seats.

For fans who like fast speeds USA International Speedway is the show not to miss. The 3/4 mile high banked racetrack demands a fast car that can endure the 150 mile race.

The final race at New Smyrna's half-mile is sure to be a wild affair with the Triple Crown Championship on the line as well as the prospect of one racer adding his name to the prestigeous Governor's Cup.

Regardless of who wins the Triple Crown, one thing is for sure: the late model stock car fans of Florida win big!
