Charlotte County Speedway Prepares For Weekend Of Racing

By Jack Smith

Leroy Davidson has announced he plans to have a full schedule of racing this weekend at Charlotte County Speedway.

The race card this for Saturday is scheduled to include the Limited Late Models, twin 25 lap events for the Outlaw Modifieds, Mini Stocks, Pure Stocks and Road Warriors.

Davidson said "They are going to continue to fight me, but I have plenty of people to work, I'm not worried about it", referring to efforts by the management group headed by Naples attorney Chris Felden, which has been operating the speedway since August 2001, to prevent him from running a show this weekend.

Davidson also said he was making some repairs to the track in turns one and three, "I just took some bad spots and fixed them, it's no problem at all".

Practice is scheduled for Friday night according to Davidson.

But Davidson will not necesarily have a smooth sail taking the track back.

Draw your own conclusions about the statements made on the Charlotte County web site operated by the Feldens:

"Well, it wasn't a tornado that hit the speedway this time, but an individual determined to keep all of us racing fans from having a great time! This past Sunday, the track was broken into and the actual track was vandalized, causing us once again to postpone the upcoming first leg of the Triple Crown. We are truly sorry for any inconvenience this causes our drivers and fans."

The site also announced that the track was closed this weekend.

Davidson says he and his sister Mary Benson control all of the stock in Charlotte County Speedway Inc., the business that leases the track from the Charlotte County Airport Authority.

Davidson also claims the sublease under which Charlotte County Sports and Recreation LLC (Felden's organization) is invalid, a point that was made as well by members of the Airport Authority at its June board meeting.

CCAA board members say they did not approve the sublease. Members of the CCAA also indicated they had not approved the sale of the track from Glen Vanhorn to the Charlotte County Sports and Recreation LLC.

Felden's Executive Director Ronnie Bacelo said "we really won't see no major changes until Thursday", the day Chris Felden is expected back from a European vacation.

Bacelo also said he had been in contact with Don Nerone of FASCAR and were preparing a press release rescheduling the Triple Crown to a later date.

Nerone, waiting to see how things at Charlotte pan out, said " we will have a Triple Crown".

"Whatever he does he does" Bacelo stated, "until the Feldens get here and can proceed with the hearings, we were instructed to stay away".

When asked about the Airport Authority's stand on the sublease, Bacelo replied "I really don't know too much about the sublease stuff, but I do know they are contacting Glen (Vanhorn) since he was the last one to sign on that".

Meanwhile plans move ahead at Charlotte County Speedway to get ready for Saturday night racing, under yet another new management.

"When I opened this track in the beginning I didn't have any staff, I'll manage", Davidson said.
