Drawdy Dominates All American Challenge Series Race Number Seven

By Rick Anges

Bradenton, Fl. - Mother nature washed out qualifying for A.A.C.S. race #7. The field was lined up by the current points standing and with the roll of the die the first two rows were inverted putting the #07 of Jeff Scofield and multiple race winner B.J. McLeod #78 on the front row for the high powered main event.

The King Dicky Anderson #00 making his return to the "South's Fastest Short Track" and due to this being his first race in the All American Challenge Series was relegated to start from the rear of the field.

McLeod jumped out to the early lead and had his car hooked up pulling away from the rest of the field. Behind McLeod there was plenty of racing going on with Drawdy having a mirror full of current points leader #61 Jimmy Cope.

The two were resuming the battle they had had in race #6 running side by side for several bumping and grinding lap after lap for the second spot. Cope was able to get Drawdy loose with a bump draft move and moved into the second spot.

With the track still being pretty green from all the rain earlier a lot of cars were having a hard time hooking up. Dave Pletcher #75 had a tense moment when the #79 of Clint Slaggy made contact with the #64 of Bobby Coyle sending Slaggy spinning right in front of Pletcher who made slight contact with the #79 but all were able to continue.

The top three cars of McLeod, Cope and Drawdy were having a race of their own for the top spot but in the meantime the #00 of Anderson was quietly making his way towards the front moving into the top ten at about lap 40 the same time that Cope made his move and took the lead the from McLeod.

The car that was really on a wire though was the #5 of Joe Boyd. Boyd was putting his car anywhere he wanted to, passing cars at will, and by lap fifty had put the black #5 on the rear bumper of Cope.

Boyd looked outside on Cope and looked like he would make the pass when Cope came up into him on the backstretch causing major body damage to the #5 machine. After several laps Boyd was forced to retire his machine for the night.

By the half-way mark Drawdy had taken the lead from Cope but Pletcher and Anderson were right there behind him. Coming out of turn two Pletcher made the move on Cope but Cope tried a block that didnt work as Pletcher sent him spinning in a cloud of tire smoke sending the rest of the field scattering to avoid a major wreck.

Cope got back in the gas and continued and the race stayed green.

From that point on it was all Drawdy as he blew by the rest of the field and lapped every car except second and third place to take his first victory and the apparent points lead in the A.A.C.S.

Coming across the stripe in second was Pletcher, Anderson came from the rear of the field to take the third spot, Cope was able to recover from the spin for fourth and the #31 of Jeff Sloan took fifth.

Points and money earned prior to the June 8 race

Sportsman 50 lap Shoot-Out:
The Sportsman shoot out saw wild action early when several cars tangled early in the race sending several cars flying in the air one of which was #38 Wallace Body Damage Ramsey who slammed hard into the turn four wall after literally driving over the top of the #8 of Steve Black.

Ramsey had several choice words for the #96 of Bill Anderson who was also involved in the crash. All the drivers were able to walk away.

Cliff Bifaro #12 appeared to have the car to beat but late in the race his motor exploded in a cloud of smoke spewing fluids on the track taking him and the second place car of #89 Jimmy Cook up into the turn two wall ending the night for both drivers.

Duane Best #67 assumed the lead and looked to have it in the bag but on the last lap #3 Johnny Casady was able to get around Best and take the win. Gus Coorseen #41 came in third.

Street Stock
Casey Hall #1 held on for the win in the hard fought battle for the street stock feature event. #4 Tommy Huffstutler, #10x Matt Scheffler and the #77 of Scott Woodland all tried to get by but Hall was able to pull it off and take the checkers. Scheffler took second; Huffstutler third fourth went to Woodland and fifth was the # 12 Dan Hall.

Open Wheel Modified:
Wayne Jefferson #1 dominated the Open Wheel race winning by a full straight away over second place Bill Davis #15. Steve Perez #92 took the third spot followed #60 Pat Nanney and #80 Chris Dean.
