Dempsey Tops S.A.R.A. Modified Field At DeSoto Speedway

By Rick Anges

(KNS - BRADENTON, FL) - When the smoke had cleared on qualifying for the Southern Automobile Racing Association 50 lap feature event it was past champ Dwayne Dempsey #6 on top of the pack of twenty-two cars with the fast time.

Dempsey was in a car that had to be re-clipped earlier in the year from a bad wreck that almost destroyed the car.

The die rolled and the field was inverted two rows putting local favorite Bill Davis #15 on the front row.

When the green dropped though it was the Rocket Man Wayne Jefferson #1 jumping out to the early lead.

But it didnt take long for Dempsey to make his to the back bumper of the #1 car. Jefferson and Dempsey hooked up and pulled away from the rest of the field. Lap sixteen saw Dempsey used an inside move and took the lead coming out of four.

S.A.R.A. points leader John Anderson in the #1x seemed like he just couldnt get the car hooked up and was involved in an altercation when the #18 of Shawn Lemaster grenaded a motor going into turn three collecting several cars up in the melee. Anderson was able to continue but finished out of the top five.

On the restart Jefferson moved in on Dempsey and gave him a couple of bumper taps but Dempsey was able to hold and take the victory. Timmy Moore #57 crossed the stripe in third followed by Bill Davis #15 fourth and finishing fifth was the 11b of Jamie Burrows.

Mini-Stock

Shane Whitbeck #22 drove away from the field in the mini-stock feature race and took well-earned win. Jon Bailey #14 held onto the second spot ahead of William Slack #20 who was third, John Wilson #05 took the fourth spot and fifth went to the #54.

Pure Stocks

Joe Wengard #30 took his battered looking ride to another trip to the winners circle once again. Rob Taylor #8 held off a hard charging Peggy Hurst # 3 to take the second spot. Mark Pikelsimer #6 held off teammate Bob Petrillli #4 for fourth.

Street Stocks

The Street Stock field had the crowd on their feet for the first several laps as the top seven cars ran side by side around the high banks all battling for the top spot.

#27 Jonathon Hiedenthal was the early leader but the car appeared to get loose and he slid back to a fifth place finish.

Dan Hall #12 and #69 of Chet Roberts were battling hard for the lead with Hall coming out the victor and Roberts settling for second.

Third went to Tommy Huffstutler #4, fourth to #10x Matt Scheffler.

Cowboy Cadillacs

Young John Sarpircone #2 had everyone on their feet sliding his big truck through the turns and running the high line but it was Don Van Acker #33 who got by the youngster and took yet another victory. The #2 apparently broke something spinning down the back stretch and was unable to finish. #24 Justin Bryant was second #13 Jay Bryant third and fourth was the #7 of Chris Oliver.

DeSoto Trucks

It took several tries to get the Pro Truck feature going but when they finally got to racing it was all Shane Russ in the #94.

Russ jumped out to the lead and never looked back finishing ahead of the #70 of Mason Love, #7 Bill Davis, #22 and the #50 of Andy Breedlove.

Mod-Minis

Steve Gill #5 kept his streak alive much like his brother Bobby in the Hooter Pro Cup series taking yet another commanding win in the Mod-Mini feature. Randy Koon #22 gave it all he had but could not catch the hard charging Gill and settles for second.

Jimmy Warren #82 brought his ride home in third, Clay Joseph #44 brought his battered ride home in fourth and fifth was #1 of Brent Yoder.
