Kahne Leads Last 4 Laps for Volusia All-Star Win

Kahne

by Leo Dougherty
Volusia Speedway Park, Barberville, FL (Sunday, February 10, 2002)-Tonights show was run without benefit of time trials. The top six in points in the following order, Danny Lasoski, Lance Dewease, Joey Saldana, Chad Kemenah, Travis Rilat, and Kenny Jacobs began the evening locked into the A main. However, they were inverted for the starting grid.

Kasey Kahne came all the way to Florida from Ecumlaw, Washington and a seventh place start to collect the $7,000 All Star Circuit of Champions win. He didnt break into the top four until lap 24 and led only the last four laps.

On a slick track that had tires smoking most of the race, Kenny Jacobs claimed the lead for the first 26laps. Even though there were only three cautions for minor incidents traffic wasnt a factor for most of the race.

Perhaps the best run of the evening came from Stevie Smith who started dead last and worked his way into the fourth position by lap 27 and finished the race in third place.

Mike Erdley hit the outside wall in the front stretch on the first lap of his qualifying heat, losing his right rear wheel. Stevie Smith and Tyler Walker exchanged the third place spot each of the first three laps until Walker was able to put a little distance between the two cars, claiming the final transfer spot into the A main.

As the dash field took the green flag, Lasoski got sideways going into turn two. Rilat tried to avoid him but got sideways, collecting Kenny Jacobs. Lasoski took his car to the pits and didnt return to finish the dash.

The All Stars action moves next to East Bay Raceway. Webmaster Allan Holland will be at those races and will post results as they occur. Ill work on my photography and I also hope to do some profiles.

I want to thank everyone who sent emails to me and commented to me in person about the coverage to this point.
