Lance Dewease takes Putnam All-Star Opener

PICTURE

by Leo Daugherty
Putnam County Speedway, Palatka, FL (2/6/02)-The All Stars opened their season at this very difficult 3/8-mile track tonight. With long straightaways and very short turns, it looks somewhat like a large paper clip. Mike Woodring, who practiced here on Tuesday night said, You almost have to stop to go through the turns.

After having a difficult time in his heat, Lance Dewease once again turned adversity into a victory. When a red flag set up a three lap sprint to the finish, it was just what he needed to get out of traffic and into a clear track, winning yet another race on his Florida tour.

We got in a little trouble in the heat race, he said, and we changed the car all around and got it running. We had trouble keeping the front end on the ground.

Tim Shaffer took the lead on the green, holding it until lap 14 when Lance Dewease took over. A caution just as lap two completed put Greg Hodnett out of the race and sent a good-running Gary Wright to the tail of the field. Wright began working his way back through the field but left the track on lap eleven.

Another yellow as lap thirteen was completed set up the pass on Shaffer for Dewease when the race restarted.

On lap 27, a yellow came out for a spin by Bill Rose and, when the race was restarted, Shane Stewart and Kenny Adams touched wheels setting off a spectacular set of flips. Stewarts car was as high as the catch fence on the backstretch and Adams car, almost as high, made at least one complete roll without touching the ground. Both drivers walked away from their cars.
