Dewease takes early feature

by Leo Dougherty(Hoseheads.com)
East Bay Raceway, Gibsonton, FL (Friday, 2/1/02)-Todays action started at 4:00 P.M. in order to complete Wednesday nights program. Despite dumping tons of water on the track throughout the morning and afternoon it was slicked up black before the completion of the second B main.

Lance Dewease of Fayetteville, PA took a page from the book of Gary Wrights win last night, coming out of the B main to a 10th row start, giving East Bay fans another exciting race.

Curt Michael of Ocean View, DE sat on the pole and, before there was a lap in the books Wright gave himself, fans, and more than a few people in the pits outside turn one a terrible scare when he and Jeff VanDusen crashed in turn one. Wrights car became airborne, went into the catch-fence, and came to rest standing on its nose against the turn one light control tower. Both drivers were unhurt but, if not for the catch-fence, there very likely would have been a bunch of people hurt in the pits.

Phil Gressman of Clyde, OH came out of his third position to claim the lead when the race did officially get underway holding onto the lead until lap 23.

Dewease did not appear to be a factor until claiming third place on lap 17 and second place on lap 18. His car seemed to get better and better as the laps progressed until he was finally in a position to make a move on Gressman. Gressman might have won the race if not for lapped traffic but both he and Dewease had to contend with backmarkers. He got by Gressman on lap 24 and was able to hold him off until the checkered flag.

Brad Pake of Fulton, MN won the first B main that was held over from Wednesday night. Mike Brecht of Deshler, OH won the second B main.

There will be a viewing for Ron Laney on Sunday in Humble, TX. On Monday there will be a private funeral ceremony for family and racing friends only. If you wish to send a card or flowers, send them to the Rosewood Funeral Home, 2602 Old Humble Road, Humble, TX 77396.
