Gary Wright takes 360 win at East Bay

by Leo Dougherty(Hoseheads.com)
East Bay Raceway, Gibsonton, FL (2/1/02)-Thursday evening (1/31/02) started off here with Jack Miller talking about two Texans at the drivers meeting, John Bankston and Ron Laney. The evening ended with Miller talking to another Texan in victory lane.

Gary Wright of Hooks, TX won the 25 lap feature by coming from the B main to the A main and putting on a driving clinic in the process. He made it into the B main by virtue of his third place heat finish and won the B main.

Wayne Johnson (Oklahoma City, OK) started on the pole with Lance Dewease (Fayetteville, PA) beside him. In the early going it appeared as though the night belonged to Dewease, who was lapping traffic on lap three. He continued to lead until a caution on lap 12 bunched up the field. By this time, Wright had worked his way up to third place. On the next lap Wright claimed second just as another caution came out. When racing resumed, Wright set his sights on Dewease and blasted past him on lap 15.

Another caution on lap 17 gave Dewease a chance to reclaim his lead but couldnt make the pass on the restart. Wright, who was flawlessly working his way through heavy traffic, had a commanding lead when a caution on lap 24 made the race a one lap race. Dewease made one last attempt to get the lead back but Wright was too strong for him.

The official results of the race were delayed when Jeff Sheperd protested the last lap restart, claiming that he was passed on the outside by one car and the inside by another car before the restart cone.

This is a passing points race, he said. By Saturday night those points will be very important.

Track officials confirmed Friday morning that no change was made in the finishing order.
