McCarl wins USCS Sunshine State Shootout at Volusia

Barberville, Florida - Knoxville Raceway track champion, Terry McCarl from Pleasant Hill, Iowa, won Saturday night's star studded thirty-five car field in the United Sprint Car Series "Sunshine State Shootout" presented by Goodson Farms, Inc., of Balm, Florida. McCarl started outside row four and made his move to the front early and streaked to second place on lap three, behind 2000 USCS champion, Kenny Adams from Malabar, Florida. Adams led the next lap before McCarl went by for the lead on lap five to lead the rest of the circuits in the 25 lap event with the USCS regulars nipping at his tail. McCarl won the Saturday night event at Volusia in 2000.

The exciting event saw the "Bartlett Bullet," Terry Gray from Bartlett, Tennessee with five USCS wins in a row, move by Adams on lap seven into second and start to reel McCarl in. Two laps later, Jim Raptis of Marietta, Georgia, passed Gray on the back stretch and passed the race leader (McCarl) on lap eleven only to have a caution fly for Brian Thomas of Auburn, Georgia sending Raptis back behind, McCarl. Raptis, who like several others, was on a hard tire and it took him a few laps to get going.

On lap nineteen, Gray got back by Raptis and took up the chase again, closing on McCarl and almost getting by on lap twenty four to finish two car lengths down.Gray was followed by Adams, Raptis, and East Bay Raceway 2001 champion, Sport Allen from Largo, Florida in fifth. All Star Circuit of Champions 2001 championship runner-up, Chad Kemenah, seven time ESS champion, Mike Woodring from Eden , New York, followed in seventh, Ohio's Mike Brecht was eight, ASCoC regular Greg Wilson from Findlay, Ohio was ninth and Maryland's Jon Eldreth rounded out the top ten.

McCarl collected the $1,000 bonus posted by USCS President, Pete Walton on any driver to beat Terry Gray after Gray's recent dominance reached five in a row.

McCarl picked up a total of $3000 for his win and a spot in Sunday night's Airflow Research "Super Power Dash" 10 car , 10 lap, $10,000 possible to win high stakes shootout event.

Heat race winners were Kemenah, Raptis, Gray and 16 year old East Bay Raceway hotshoe, Casey Johnson. The final Airflow Research Power Dash was won by Kenny Adams. The Huggins Cams "Hard Charger" award went to McCarl for passing seven cars. Eldreth won the B main.
