                              New Smyrna Speedweeks

After having to bite and claw his way from the rear of the field to salvage a good finish on night number one Wildwood (FL) driver Wayne Anderson led every circuit to best a 32-car field to win the Late Model Feature event on night number two of the 33rd Annual World Series of Asphalt Stockcar Racing.

Anderson started on the outside of row one for the main event and took the top spot heading into turn one from polesitter Brian Hoppe and never looked back.

''Last night it was a shame we had to come from the back three times to finish third,'' Anderson said, ''But I guess we didn't have anybody to run into tonight with starting up front.''

Anderson was challenged heavily twice during the event. An early challenge came from Canadian Scott Fraser on lap 12 when Fraser tried to get underneath Anderson coming off turn for. The two made contact and Anderson drove away while Fraser got hooked up with Ronnie Burkett, who was running third, when Burkett tried to take advantage of Fraser slowing from the contact with Anderson. Burkett and Fraser spun bringing out the caution and casuing some  cosmetic damage to both cars. Fraser was able to continue while Burkett parked it for the remainder of the event.

Anderson's most serious challenge came from local standout David Rogers of Orlando when a late race caution flew bunching up the field for the final lap. Anderson started on the inside with Rogers on his high side and they battled sisd by side for the lead into turn three until Anderson came away with the adavantage.

''I knew that last restart was going to be tough with a guy like David Rogers on my outside,'' Anderson said, ''But he race me clean. Hard but clean. What do you expect from a professional like David.''

Rogers held on for second with Brian Hoppe, Jason Schuler and Lee Faulk rounding out the top five.

In the NASCAR Tour Type Modified main event it was Long Island, (NY) Jamie ''The Jet'' Tomaino taking top honors. Doug French started on the pole for the feature but was out dragged raced by Tomaino down into turn one and with the lead Tomaino's first win of the 1999 version of the World Series of Asphalt Stockcar Racing was secure.Ted Christiphor recovered from an early spin to finish second with Friday's winner George Kent finishing third and Eric Beers and Mike Fitch rounding out the top five. The SK Bonus winner was Jim Willis.

In the Mini-Stock 20-lap feature event New Smyrna Beach's Bob Doxie became the first repeat winner of the World Series of Asphalt Stockcar Racing on the second night as he bested a 30-car field to bring home the chekered flag. Doxie started from the fifth position and wasted little time in taking the lead, grabbing the top spot on lap five after the then leaders, Steve Rigsby and Steve Gill,  got together in turn one and he then went on to  control the final fifteen laps to take the top spot for the second night in a row. Kelly Jarrett, Randy Koon, Stev Gill and Greg Luecki rounded out the top five.

The Sportsman 20-lap feature saw a repeat of night one as Randy Hecker of Daytona Beach, (FL) took the checkered flag after a caution filled event for his second win of the World Series. Pat Buckley finished second with Larry Fitzsimmons, Brian Holifield and Chad Pierce rounding out the top five.

Other winners on the night included Rich Clouser, Bombers, and Jim Jones, Run-A-Bouts.

LATE MODEL NOTES

   * Former FASCAR track champion Ricky Wood failed to make the feature event for the second night in a row.    * ''The competition here for the World Series is tough it's a lot tougher here than at some of the bigger shows I was at last year.'' said Wayne Anderson of Wildwood, (FL), ''It's like a who's who out there.''

   * Florida Pro Series regular Lee Faulk is on hand for the World Series and has put together a deal with T.C.B. Ogle Racing and David Russell for Speedweeks and hopes to have something for the FPS for the upcoming season.

   * Former World Series champion Pete Orr was oon hand for night number one as a spectator not a competitor. ''We'll be here later in the week the car just isn't ready yet.'' Orr said, ''This year we are just going to run for the big money shows and see what comes out of it.''

   * Junior Hanley of Ontario, Canada, former World Series champion, has comitted to running all nine nights of the World Series and has some high hopes. ''We came here to win some races,'' Hanley said, ''The competition is tough but we can get it done.''

   * Former Winston Racing Series National Champion and ageless short track veteran David Rogers of Orlando, (FL) is not surprised by the competition on hand. ''This thing runs in cycles,'' Rogers said, ''This just happens to be a real good cycle for the World Series.''

   * 1998 World Series Late Model Champion Jason Schuler of Fort Atkinson, (WI) hopes that he can keep up with everybody this year. ''Boy, this is a lot different than last year,'' Schuler said, ''A win would be nice but with all these good cars on hand I just hope we finish up front.''
