    SpeedWeeks New Smyrna

The 33rd Annual World Series of Asphalt Stockcar Racing kicked off Friday night at New Smyrna Speedway with Bobby Gill of Dalton, GA winning the Late Model feature
event and George Kent of Horseheads, NY taking top honors in the NASCAR Tour Type Modified main event
.
Scott Wimmer of Wassau, WI started on the pole for 25-lap Late Model feature but saw that top spot evaporate quickly with Gill jumping out front from the third position heading into turn one. Gill had to make the daring move on three seperate ocassions as the main event was forced to restart everytime Gill jumped out front for a variety of on track incidents. Once out front Gill never relenquished the top spot and was also never seriously challenged for the lead during the cousre of the event.

''It's just unreal with all those restarts,'' Gill said, ''After about the first ten it just got rediculous.'' Gill's road to victory lane was not easy as an error by the crew cost the veteran driver to lose a tire during qualifying for the nights events.

''After the wheel coming off during qualifying we needed this win on the first night.'' Gill added, ''The car was just awsome. We're gonna do a little fine tuning on it and it'll be better for tomorrow.''

Junior Hanley finished second with with Wayne Anderson, Lee Faulk and Bill Zordo rounding out the top five.
Anderson's third place finish was amazing after being sent to the rear of the 32-car field three times, twice for rough driving and once for getting caught up in an accident.

''It was a long night,'' Anderson said, ''We kept the car in one piece and that was one of our goals another was to win some races so we'll have to come back to get some wins.''

The Late Model feature took nearly a hour to finish having to be red flagged four times. The most serious accident happened on the original start after David Rogers of Orlando (FL) and Bruce Lawrence of Deland (FL) got together on the race track causing extensive damage to both cars but no injuries to any drivers. None of the red flags during the Late Model main event caused injuries to any drivers.

It took nearly ten years but George Kent finally was able to get back into victory lane at New Smyrna Speedway during the World Series but after starting on the pole Kent led all 25-laps with some hard charges from Ted Christopher to pick up thwe $1500 win. His first since 1989.

''Teddy is a tough old competitor and he worked us hard,'' Kent said, ''We made some changes to the car just before the feature and the car started to get loose towards the end but we were able to pull it off.''

Christopher finished second with Tim Arre Jamie Tomaino and Eric Beers rounding out the top five. Brad Burkis captured the Limited Late Model feature after inheriting the lead from Brad May on lap five after May got tangled up with a lapped car and piled his Chevrolet into the wall.

''We were out racing and having a good time and got up on some lapped traffic and wound up in the wall,'' May said, ''I though I had the lapped car cleared but I guess I didn't.''

Barkis held off a late race challenge from second place finisher Mike Beyer on the last lap coming off of turn four and picked up his first ever World Series win.

''We worked real hard to get here.'' Barkis said, ''We figured it out without much practice and it just all came togther tonight.''

Dave Snodgrass, Dan Dalyle and Larry Osteen chased Barkis and Bayer across the stripe to round out the top five.

Other winners on night number one of the World Series included,Bob Doxie; mini-stocks and Randy Hecker; sportsman.
