IT'S TIME TO RACE!!
June 8, 2005
Junkyard Dog Tops Buses, Middleton takes Reverse Race at Orlando SpeedWorld
by Dave Westerman

Despite all day rains including a major storm that saw heavy wind and rain just hours before the show was to begin, Orlando Speedworld's first Crash-A-Rama of 2005 went off without a hitch with a record number of vehicles participating.

The normal SRO crowd was a bit off due to the weather conditions, but the main grandstand was still packed with fans as the rains finally quit just minutes before the show started.

Chuck "Junkyard Dog" Rush came out of retirement (again) and dominated the School Bus Figure Eight race leading most of the way as many of his competitors were having a difficult time negotiating the muddy figure eight track. The intersection was completely blocked by stalled buses for most of the race, so drivers had to take to the soggy infield each lap.

Two School Bus Figure Eight heats were held before the feature with heat wins going to Corey Freed and Rip Dyal.

The Boat/Trailer race was a lot more tame than normal as most of the boats actually stayed on their trailers the entire distance. Fan favorite and "Carpocalypse" star Raybo Rowland led most of the way only to be passed by both David Lavine and Bomber Bill Loomis on the final turn.

There were a whopping 42 entries in the very muddy flagpole race. When all was said and done Mad Jack Rickle was the winner.

Jay Middleton surprised everybody by winning the Reverse Race while Nick Boley topped the Blindfold Race. "Moe's" Yellow Team won the Auto Roller Derby.

North Carolina visitor Kenny McNamee survived 23 other contestants and a protest to win the V-8 Demo Derby while John Allison came home with the trophy and cash for winning the Compact Demo Derby. The Mini Van Demo Derby was won by Shawn Michaels.

The second season of "Carpocalypse" on Spike TV begins filming in Florida starting in early July. Billed as the "Civil War," or "Bithlo vs. Buffalo," five drivers from Florida will compete against five drivers from New York for a grand prize of $50,000.
Filming begins July 9 at New Smyrna Speedway followed by a July 16 date at Ocala Speedway. "Carpocalypse" then moves to Orlando Speedworld for three tapings starting July 23. All three of those tapings will be done following the regular Saturday night racing program at Speedworld meaning fans will get to see plenty of action on those nights.

The TV crews and drivers then head to Holland Speedway, just east of Buffalo, NY for five tapings in August and early September. Airing of "Carpocalypse: The Civil War" is scheduled to begin in late September or early October.

Orlando Speedworld returns to regular racing action this Friday and Saturday night. The Friday night stock car program features all of the regular divisions including Super Late Models, Sportsman, Modifieds, Mini Stocks, Super Stocks and Strictly Stocks. Race time is 8PM.

Saturday, racing starts at 7PM and features the RE/MAX Legends Cars, Bandeleros, Hurricanes, and Classic Cars in action.
