Choquette takes SLM, Freed again in Mods at SpeedWorld
|
by Dave Westerman
Young West Palm Beach driver Jeff Choquette made his first visit to Orlando Speedworld this season Friday night and took home the win in the 25 lap Super Late Model feature. Despite a stellar first year in super Late Models including a Florida Governor's Cup win, it was Choquette's first career win at Speedworld.
Mack Hanbury was back in form and led the opening lap, but Choquette was way too strong as he powered out front on lap two, and, from there, it was just a race to see who would finish second.
Caution for a tangle between Eric Deffendal and Ricky Wood slowed the proceedings on lap six. Hanbury was doing a great job holding off a large group of cars for second before Jared Allison finally got hooked up in the high groove and motored by Hanbury as the field came to the half-way signal.
On lap thirteen, Mike Hinegardner and Ronnie Roach got together coming off turn four while battling for fourth place bringing out the yellow again.
Choquette had no trouble holding off Allison the rest of the way, even with a lap 19 slowdown for Scott McKinley's stalled car tossed in.
Choquette took the checker with point leader Allison in second. Roach came back to claim third while Hanbury nailed down fourth for his low-budget team, a victory in itself considering Mack's recent luck. Coming home fifth was the winner's younger brother Corey Choquette who was making his first ever start at Speedworld.
2004 SLM Champion Ricky Wood (making his first start of the year) was sixth with Rich Clouser, Deffendall, Greg Brooke and McKinley completing the top ten. Super Late Model heats were won by Allison and Hinegardner.
The Modified feature race had barely taken the green flag before a big mix-up sent Alan Bruns hard into the turn one wall. Bruns' old bones were rattled a bit but he was otherwise OK while his racer was severely damaged and towed to the pits.
The second start was much better with Bob Beiler grabbing the early advantage. Corey Freed was charging through the field and snatched the lead away on lap four and never looked back to score his fourth win of the young season. The only caution of the race came when Beiler spun on lap seven.
Jimmy Wilkins made a late charge but couldn't unseat Freed from the top spot and settled for second followed by Jared Allison in third, Chuck Burkhalter in fourth and Shain Held in fifth. Jason Boyd took the heat win.
For the second week in a row, the leader in the Sportsman feature blew an engine while leading. This week it was Earl Beckner who saw his engine literally explode coming off turn four on lap ten. Unlike the previous week when everyone managed to avoid Charlie Vest's car. the second through fourth place machines weren't so lucky. Richard Hight got into Beckner's car sending Beckner's machine spinning into the infield. Meanwhile both heat race winner Jeff Wright and Andy Nichols got into the wall ending their evenings.
With just superficial damage to his car, Hight motored on to take the win, his third of the year, over Donnie Smith, Timmy Todd, Jr., Eddie Thornton and Paul Hudson.
The Mini Stock feature was an all green flag affair as Keith Lilley led all the way to take his second win of the year. Pedie Allison scored his best finish of 2005 in second trailed by Sean Bass, Josh Hermann and John Cook.
Ray Mullis led the opening six laps of the Super Stock feature before Jason Foster took over and sped to his third win of the year. The point leader held off a furious charge by John Castro to get the win while Mullis had his best run of the year in grabbing third. Dave "White Fire" Wright was fourth just in front of Johnny Brown. Heat wins went to Foster and Bob Starr who would go on to finish sixth in the feature.
"The Patriot," Andy Richards, in his red-white-and blue Chevy Corsica, finally tasted victory in the Strictly Stock feature leading most of the way.
Ray Brown was second with Scott Cecil, Nick Boley and William Hindman rounding out the top five.
