IT'S TIME TO RACE!!
April 16, 2005
Hinegardner and Allison top SLM and Modified Features at Orlando SpeedWorld
Dave Westerman

Largo driver Mike Hinegardner became the fourth different winner in four races this year in the Super Late Model division at Orlando Speedworld on a cool, breezy Friday night.

Hinegardner backed up his heat race win with a flag to flag run to the checker in the 25-lap Super Late Model feature. The only big incident of the race came on lap two when Ronnie Roach and Bobby Fleckinger got tangled up in turn four but both drivers were able to continue.

Rich Clouser passed Eric Deffendall for second on lap 13 and chased down Hinegardner in the closing laps, but ran out of time to mount a serious challenge and settled for the runner-up spot.

Jared Allison took the show position followed by Roach, Deffendall, Fleckinger, Greg Brooke and Mack Hanbury. Last weeks winner Dalton Zehr had problems in practice and did not compete.

Allison came back to lead from start to finish in the Modified feature that went all the way under green.

The Cocoa driver had the field covered as he led Chuck Burkhalter to the line. Jimmy Wilkens made his first start of the year and came home with a good third place effort followed by Michael Williams and Jason Boyd.

Rounding out the field were Hoot Flynn, Shain Held, Corey Freed and Terri Bryant. Bob Beiler was unable to start the feature after a bout with the wall in the heat which was won by Burkhalter.

The Sportsman feature was also an all green flag run with Andy Nichols notching his first win of the year leading all the way despite some late pressure from heat race winner Jeff Wright who settled for second.

Richard Hight, Jack Lenzen, Rusty Ebersole, Joe Adams, Charlie Vest, Timmy Todd, Jr. and Billy Belflower completed the finishers while John Hodge did not start.

Sean Bass' best friend on this night was Michael Seay. Bass, going for his fourth win in a row in the Mini Stocks, was caught by officials jumping the initial start of the race. Bass quickly made his way to the front but technically at the time was running second due to the penalty.

Had the race run all the way under green, Bass would have finished second, but Seay spun his car with a few laps to go and brought out the caution flag. The penalty was assessed on the restart and Keith Lilley inherited the lead.

That lead was short-lived as Bass quickly re-took the top spot and sped to win number four in a row. Heat winner Robbie Yoakam came home second but could not chase down Bass. Lilley claimed third ahead of Josh Hermann, Seay, John Cook and Pedie Allison.

Ron Whaley sped past early leader Brandon Evans and led the rest of the way to claim his second Super Stock feature win of the year. Evans later brought out the caution as the engine let go in his car near the half way mark.

Whaley took the win over a fast-closing Jason Foster with Robert Ward having a great run for third. John Castro grabbed fourth spot just in front of the Chevelle of Tom Vento. Johnny Brown, Bob Starr, Donald Springer, Dave Wright, and Jeff Parrish rounded out the top ten.

Super Stock heats were won by Whaley and Castro. The Strictly Stock class continues to build and a V-8 powered car finally took a win this week as Nick Boley led most of the way to claim his first ever victory here. P.J. Nascaro did his best to chase down Boley but had top settle for second ahead of Jeff Woodrough, Calvin Williams and Robert Remus. Completing the top ten were Ray Brown, Thomas Hibbard, Richie Riley, Andy Richards and Justin Collier.
