IT'S TIME TO RACE!!
March 13, 2005
Timmy Moore Takes 100 Lap Open Wheel
By Rick Anges

Bradenton, Fl. With 21 high-powered Open Wheels on
hand for the opening race of the Q-Auto and Injury
Open Wheel series the fireworks were inevitable.

Wayne “the Rocketman” Jefferson blistered the high
banks of DeSoto with the only 14 second run in
qualifying turning a 14.99, second fast time went to
Robbie McAuliffe who clipped a 15.12.

When the die came up on a “0” leaving the field as
qualified everyone’s opinion was that the real race
would be for second.

The green dropped and Jefferson showed his early
dominance jumping out to a full straightaway lead. But
towards the mid point of the race Jefferson’s car
seemed to be fading as Timmy Moore pulled within a
carlength of the leader.

The drama began just after the half way mark as a
five-car pile up brought out the red flag. With the
cars halted on a front stretch Jefferson jumped out of
his ride and began adjusting the air pressure on his
right rear tire. Race director Joe Calnan made the
call that “the Rocketman” would be sent to the rear of
the field for working on his car under red. After a
heated discussion on the track Jefferson took his car
to the rear and the race was on.

With Jefferson sent to the back Moore was in the top
spot. Robbie McAuliffe had a solid second run going
went his motor expired in turn four ending his night
in a cloud of smoke.

Jefferson steadily made his back towards the front
with the cheers of the fans rooting him on lap after
lap. Late in the run Jefferson had made his way back
to the top five and was racing hard with Billy “the
Kid” Mowery for the fourth spot. The two made contact
several times but were able to gather it up. Jefferson
was able to get under Mowery going into three when
they touched sending Mowery into a wild spin into the
wall demolishing his racecar.

The green came out with four laps to go and Moore was
able to take the first win of the season, Phil
Morrison held off Jefferson for second, Jefferson took
third, fourth was James Glover and in fifth Mason
Love.

Street Stocks
David Williamson showed the way in the Street Stock
feature. Williamson took the green and lead from green
to checkers, his only challenge came from ’04 Southern
Sportsman Series champion Aaron Williamson who made
several runs at the leader but had to settle for
second. Todd Freed Jr., the ’04 Mini-Stock champ in
only his third start in a street stock held off ’99
Pure Stock champ James Knight for third, in fifth it
was Greg Krom who came from the back of the pack.

Bombers
Some of the best racing of the evening came from the
Bomber class. From the drop of the green flag the cars
were swapping sheet metal and bouncing off the walls
around the racetrack. Going three and sometimes four
wide in the turns they raced every lap like it was
their last.

Jerome “Sideways” Watland had the crowd on its feet as
he was driving the wheels off the 20-machine lap after
lap.

When the smoke cleared it was Jay King who crossed the
stripe first, John Stewart held off Watland for
second, a popular third went to Watland in his first
run on the “High-Banks”, fourth was Cliff Richards,
and in fifth Jesse Adair.

Mod-Mini
Dusty Robinson was on the verge of taking the
checkered flag for the mod-mini feature but was caught
up in a crash with a lapped car in turn four handing
the win to C.J.Fisher, “Smiling” Ed Jasper returned to
the winners circle taking second, third was Dustin
Perez making his asphalt debut, Mike Margotta finished
fourth and rounding out the top five was Mike
Kerrivan.

Pro Trucks
Jim Alterizio had his truck hooked up and flying as he
dominated the truck feature to take home the trophy.
Nick King ran second, third was Danny Poling.

NAPA Auto Parts Cowboy Caddies
Rich Wildrick won his second race in a row in the
Cowboy Caddies, Joe Gagen ran a strong second, Roger
Swinton took third.
