Jason Hughes is Third Modified Winner in Three Nights at East Bay
TAMPA, FL….2/17/05…..”Last night we ran decent, but we put drive back into the car tonight and that’s what it took to get this win,” explained chassis builder and driver Jason Hughes after collecting $1,500in night three of the 6th Annual Ramada Inn on Tampa Bay Open Wheel Modified Winternationals at East Bay Raceway Park Thursday night. He became the third different driver to win over a record field of Modifieds which was down from 126 to 115 tonight.

“I’ve always wanted to come to East Bay and finally this year, I have enough good help in my chassis-building shop back in Watts, Oklahoma, so I could finally get here,” stated Hughes who brought only Steve Kiver along to be his pit crew. It was the second time this week his chassis design won a feature here, because Tuesday, Kenny Gaddis drove his Hughes to a victory, also.

Running mostly the USMTS touring series last year, Hughes finished in the top five and had a total of 29 feature wins counting three at his home track, the high banked Salina, Oklahoma speedway. “We usually run American Racer tires, so I struggled here with Hoosier tires, but I guess we got it figured out,” he said later in his pit area.

Sponsors on the winning car include DeLeon’s Racing Engines out of McAllen, Texas, Afco Shocks, Aero Race Wheels, Pro Blend and Aero Rods.

After starting on the pole for the 25-lap A-Main through luck-of-the-draw among the ten heat winners, Hughes had plenty of pressure in the early laps from outside pole sitter Shane Cottle. Brady Short and Julie McDermid made up row two, but it was Short who stayed close to Cottle and by lap four, fast timer, Chad Kinder had joined the tight formation of the front four.

Cottle got a nose under Hughes in a serious challenge for the lead coming off turn four, but Hughes made a perfect line and was still ahead as they completed lap eight. A yellow came out for a tangle in turn four with ten laps in the books. The restart lineup showed Hughes, then Cottle, Short, Kinder, Jimmy Owens up from seventh, and Dan Hamstra.

Just one lap later, Kinder had passed Short for third spot then fourth-running Hamstra spun to the inside in turn one to bring out another yellow. By lap 13, with Hughes still leading Cottle, Kinder made an inside move to take over second spot.

The two front cars of Hughes and Kinder were pulling away from third place Short and fourth place Kent Arment when the final yellow flew on lap 20. With the five-to-go signal from flagman Julian Mullis, Hughes made sure he turned perfect laps to keep Kinder behind him.

Last night’s winner Owens left his low groove and went high with three laps remaining and blew by Arment to take over fourth spot. Coming for the white flag, Owens continued to build his momentum on the top groove and took third away from Short. It appeared that he had the same move planned to overtake both front-runners when a bobble by those two caused Owens to hesitate in turn two. He tried to make the high groove in turns three and four his surprise winning move, but he fell short.

Hughes pulled off a narrow win over Kinder, and Owens settled for third ahead of Short and Arment. Denny Schwartz, Cottle, David Hess, McDermid and Joel Cryderman ranked in the top ten.

Bob Pohlman, Jr, Mark Dotson, Jason Miller and Jeff Leka moved from the two B-Mains into the back of the A-Main. The two C-Mains sent Brad Waits, Corey Conley, Brad Rohloff and Kevin Weaver to the B-Mains. Advancing from the D-Main, it was Don Kiger, Terry McClintock, Terry Hayes and Mike Oldenberg. The Gulf Coast Produce Strawberry Dash was won by Roger Crouse. The ten heats winners were Kinder, Hughes, Owens, Schwartz, McDermid, Cryderman, Short, Hamstra, Craig Thatcher and Cottle.
