IT'S TIME TO RACE!!
February 17, 2005
JIMMY OWENS MODIFIED IS THE CLASS OF THE FIELD ON NIGHT TWO AT EAST BAY
TAMPA, FL- Time trials for the 119 cars on hand showed Chad Ohnstadt fastest with a time of 17.149. The format called for 10 heat races with the winners redrawing for starting positions in the A-Main, thus luck-of-the-draw put Owens on the pole with Dean Vickers outside. Bill Howard and Cottle were in row two ahead of Conley and Cryderman.

Owens led from the drop of the green flag, but last night’s feature winner, Kenny Gaddis spun in turn three and brought out the first yellow after just one lap. Vickers was the cause of the lap five caution and it was Gaddis and Brad Rohloff who tangled in turn two for a caution on lap nine.

”We changed the car a bunch with body panels, spoilers and rear springs and I quit making the driver errors that hurt me last night, “ said Jimmy Owens, clearly excited about his win on night two of the 6th Annual Ramada Inn on Tampa Bay worth $l,500 on Wednesday night.

“I could get a great run off the bottom and I knew it would take a good car to get around us,” the New Port, Tennessee driver explained. The race turned out just that way as Owens started on the pole and despite four yellow flags over the 25-lap distance no one had anything to match his speed. Sponsors on the winning car include H-1 Auto Parts, Hovis Racing Engines, Moser Engineering, VP Racing Fuel and Red Line Oil.

At various times during the feature Shane Cottle, Corey Conley, Bill Howard and Joel Cryderman had opportunities to be on the leader’s bumper, but not one of them could match his speed. Owens, who drives and builds the ‘Loose Gruff’ chassis for other competitors also, was pleased with the changes his crew had made as far as sheet metal.

Owens races Late Models also, but tonight the crew working on his open wheel modified included Chris Fox and Chad Brown. Another crew member Kenny Holt was resting in the truck because of a broken leg suffered here last night when he drove another car.

The next five laps of green flag racing showed Owens driving away from the field by one-half a straightaway before the final caution for David Schmauss. The battle was for second spot from that point on as Cottle tried to hold off Conley, but an outside move coming off turn four gave the spot to Conley. Cottle ranked third ahead of Cryderman and Howard who finished fifth. Kent Arment, Chad Kinder, Brady Short, Schmauss and Dick Peterson made up the top ten.

The first B-Main advanced Dave Hess and Dan Hamstra to the A-Main, while the second B-Main sent Steve Arpin and Blake Jegtvig into the A-Main also. The two C-Mains were won by Craig Christainsen and Shawn Peterson with Brent Glastetter winning the D-Main. No Gulf Coast Produce Strawberry Dash was run due to time restraints.

Thanks, Jean Lynch for East Bay Raceway Park
