First Time at East Bay Kenny Gaddis Wins Open Wheel Modified Night One
TAMPA, FL…- ”It’s my first time to East Bay and I love it here,” said Kenny Gaddis from Hallsville, Texas after winning night one of the 6th Annual Ramada Inn on Tampa Bay Open Wheel Winternationals at East Bay Raceway Park Tuesday night. He earned the $1,500 top prize over a record field of 126 cars.

The winner thanked his crew headed by Lindsey Shields and sponsors Shields Recycled Auto Parts, Destiny Freight, Sonny Melton Self Storage, Transmission Unlimited, Panel Truss and Girls2wild.net. He also gave credit to engine builder, Phluggerville Machine out of Austin, Texas.

Gaddis, who considers his home track to be Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore, Texas, had timed 20th and won the tenth heat, but a redraw for heat winners had him starting fifth on the grid of 24 cars for the 25 lap A-Main. Bill Howard and Bob Pohlman, Jr. made up the front row with Julie McDermid and David Cain in row two.

Pohlman took charge immediately and led lap one. A five car skirmish on the back stretch set the field in single-file formation on lap two. Already up to second, Gaddis explained his winning move past Pohlman, “I just tried to be smooth on the bottom and that’s how I got by him on lap three.”

Once in front, Gaddis put his brand new Hughes chassis to the test, holding off Pohlman, Howard, Kent Arment and Cain through a second yellow after six laps caused by the smoking car of Dave Hess. Building up a straight-away lead, before the final yellow on lap 17, Gaddis was not aware of the three-car battle being waged for second spot. Pohlman, Howard, Arment and 17th starting Shane Cottle had been in tight formation prior to that yellow and the following restarts showed Arment making the move in turn two that landed him solidly in second place.

In the closing laps, Gaddis had to hold off the challenges of Arment and the leader made no mistakes and took the checkered flag by a one car length margin. Cottle was the hard charger of the night and finished third ahead of Pholman and Howard. Corey Conley, Joel Cryderman, Julie McDermid, Craig Thatcher and Jeff Leka rounded out the top ten.

Chad Kinder was fast timer of the night with a time of 17.277. The D-Main sent the four cars of Craig Scott, Todd Bennett, Steve Arpin and Kelly Shryock to the back of the two C-Mains. Jimmy Owens and Corky Thomas transferred from the first C-Main whileDick Peterson and Zach VanderBeek advanced from the second C-Main.

Two B-Mains were necessary and Jeff Matthews and Rob Fuqua moved on to the A-Main from the first B-Main, then Roger Crouse and Ron Jones advanced from the second B-Main. No Strawberry Dash was run tonight, in order to conserve time.

Heats were won by Chad Kinder, Arment, Joel Cryderman, Howard, Pohlman, Cain, Denny Schwartz, McDermid, Hess and Gaddis.
