Races Cancelled after Unexpected Tragedy at New Smyrna Speedway
by Jane Smith

Samsula, Fla (October 25, 2003) There were clear skies, a nice breeze, a good crowd and double features for the Super Late Model and Late Models. But plans can change unexpectedly and they did so Saturday night at New Smyrna.

Only the rainout feature for the Super Late Models and Late Models were run and a few of the heat races for the regular FASCAR divisions. During the heat for the Sportsman, on the last lap of the race, longtime racer Homer Gordon suffered a massive heart atttack and died at the track.

Gordon evidentally suffered the heart attack coming off turns 1 and 2 and going down the frontstretch. He came off turn 1, dusted the backstretch wall, and came to rest at the entrance to the pits from the back gate.

Gordon was unconscious and non-responsive when the EMTs arrived. EVAC and Fire Rescue came in but the EVAC was waved off when it was announced he was gone.

The races were cancelled due to the County Coroner investigation. Arrangements will be announced as soon as known.

B.J. McLeod took his 54th win in the Super Late Models as he beat David Rogers to the finish line. Following McLeod to the checkered was David Rogers, Guy Thomas, Joe Fitos and Mark Vandevender.

Brian Bellaw took the point and the checkered in the Late Model rainout feature over Tim Clark, Mark Smith, Scott Siether, and Josh Schmitt.
