IT'S TIME TO RACE!!
September 29, 2003
Big Night at DeSoto Super Speedway
By Rick Anges

Close to 4,000 fans packed the grandstands for a full night of racing action including the wild and crazy "School Bus Figure 8". Mother Nature held off and weather was perfect as 120 competitors lined the pits. On hand also was the Lakewood High Mustang Marching Band who entertained the crowd all night long.

Marty Pierce came out for Limited Late Models qualifying ready for bear. As the rest of the field was having trouble getting a grip on the speedway it was Pierce who hit the setup just right. The 75 machine held the bottom groove and took fast qualifier for the evening.

A scary moment happened during the qualifying session, as Tate Pierce took the green flag and was headed down the backstretch Mark Collins drove out of the pits in the 99 machine.

Pierce slammed hard on the binders but was unable to avoid contact with Collins. Pierce is currently second in the points and was able to repair the damage that occurred during the fray. Collins was finished for the night.

The inversion of the field put the 29x of Bobby Beauchemin on the point. Beauchemin took the green and was never challenged during the 50-lap event.

Behind him there was a lot of great action. Marty Pierce was racing hard after having to start in the sixth row and avoiding all the wrecks that were occurring around him. One of those wrecks saw points leader Doug Moff trying to avoid a big wreck on the front stretch going down into the infield, sliding across the wet grass over the light pole mound and up into the turn 1 wall. Once again Moff's night was over but he was able to walk away from the crash finishing in the 16th position.

When the checkers flew it was Beauchemin making it two in a row at the "Highbanks", second went to fast time holder Marty Pierce, third was Chad "the Hood" Allman, fourth was Steve Dorer and rounding out the top five in the 50 lap feature was Lonny Miller.

Six rows were inverted for the Open Wheel feature and it was Pat Nanney who commanded most of the race in the Mopar machine. But as the laps wound down it was the Rocketman Wayne Jefferson who took the repaired 1 machine to the front.

Jefferson was able to take advantage of a slip by Nanney to take the win, Nanney crossed the stripe in second, third went to fast qualifier Timmy Moore, fourth was Lee Collins and fifth went to Kevyn Terry.

In the winners circle Jefferson thanked his crew who repaired a clutch problem that would have put him in a back up car.

School Bus Figure 8
Raymond Holtorf lead all twenty five laps of the grinding school bus race even after making hard contact at the X, Chad Miller wheeled the 98 bus to 2nd, third was the 41 of John Dutilly, fourth went to 8x of Doug King and fifth was Charles West. 17 buses lined up for the feature.
