The weather was great, and the racing was intense Saturday night at Bronson Motor Speedway.
The Open Wheel Modifieds put on a great show, and the race had lots of action and drama, before Gene Owen came home with the win. When the OWM feature took the green flag, Monty Morgan shot to the lead, followed by Larry Goolsby and Gene Owen. Morgan had his hands full as Goolsby and Owen weren’t giving him a moments rest. Morgan would open a slight advantage on the straights, but Goolsby and Owen would be all over him in the corners.
As the race was progressing thru the early stages, Goolsby and Owen made slight contact in turn 2 with Goolsby spinning off the track, bringing out the caution flag. The race restarted with Goolsby returned to the #2 position, and Owen restarting on the rear. Goolsby started working Morgan very hard in the corners, and Owen was making a big charge from the rear of the field. Goolsby looked under Morgan several times, but was unable to get a good enough run off the corner to make the pass. Finally, Goolsby got the opening that he had been looking for, and worked under Morgan off turn 2. As Morgan and Goolsby raced into turn 3, they both went for the same spot on the track, made contact, and both cars spun, bringing out another caution.
As the cars were being lined up for the restart, Morgan and Goolsby were both sent to the rear of the lead lap. The decision by track officials was not to Morgan’s liking, and he made his displeasure known on the track. As a result, Morgan was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct. The race restarted with Owen in front, after his charge through the field, and Gene was able to hold on for the win in his Owen Farms/Crown Automotive racer. Second went to John Kahl, followed by Rick Maguire. Goolsby worked his way back toward the front and claimed fourth spot.
The Mini Stock feature was a little short on cars, but the excitement meter was pegged at the top as these guys raced. When the race began, it was Dog eat Dog, and if you slip you’re history. Don Faunce, Billy Smith, Dave Westrich and Clint Foley all took turns running to the front of the pack with Faunce holding the lead most of the time. At any point in the race all 4 cars were never separated by more than a coat of paint. Dave Westrich went from second to fourth. and back to second several times in this race, as Westrich seemed to prefer running the high side of the track, and was having a good deal of success up top. As the race wound down, the competition got more intense, with 2 and 3 wide racing for the lead. The race ended with Faunce taking the win, followed by Westrich, Foley and Smith.
In the Sportsman feature , Rob Cooper came out on top of a field shortened by mechanical problems, over the last few weeks. Second went to Kimbo VanAernam.
The Pure Stock Feature was another wild one, as is becoming normal in this division.
A.J. Northrup took the early lead, with Arthur Conquest, Joey Hunt and Bobby Johnson all trying to take the lead. As the racers all jockeyed for position, it was hard to tell who was where in the race. Positions were being swapped several times a lap. At one point the leaders tried coming off turn 4 in a three wide formation, with not so good results. Several cars made contact, with leader Northrup ending up in the wall backwards, with his car too damaged to continue. After the restart, Conquest had the lead with Joey Hunt trying his best to find a way around for the lead. Hunt’s bid fell short when engine problems forced him to retire from the race. Conquest held on for the win, followed closely by a hard charging Bobby Johnson. Arnold Hughes claimed third with Tommy Ausburn fourth.
The V-8 bombers once again saw Kevin Hodge take another win, and add to his point lead. He was followed by Mike Carr and Emmitt Bottoms.
The 4 Cyl. Bombers saw Bubba Durbin overtake John DeGeorge late in the race and claim the win.
Be sure to mark your calendars for next Saturday night, Sept. 27, as the FasTrucks return to the high banks of Bronson Motor Speedway. Hope to see YOU there !!!!
