Rain K.O.'s Ocala Show - Modifieds Return this Week
by Dave Westerman

An extremely persistent rain shower put a damper on this past Friday's racing activities at Ocala Speedway forcing track officials to "throw in the towel" so to speak around 8:30. It was a good move as the drizzle continued until almost 10 PM.

In deference to the big Hobby Stock 100 lap event at Volusia Speedway Park on Sunday in which several Ocala Speedway regulars were attempting to make the field, it was decided to postpone all racing activities for the weekend instead of using the regular Sunday rain date.

Ocala area drivers did quite well at Volusia. Kevin Durden, who races in the UPM Modified and Florida Pro Super Late Model events here, led every lap of the big race at Volusia and took the win while Patrick Williams, who finished second in SLM points in the first half season chase at Ocala, put on the show of the night. Williams won the third last chance qualifying race then steadily motored through the classy field to claim fourth place. Kudos also to John Mamph, in only his third race since losing a leg in a highway accident, was one of the top qualifiers and ran well in the big show despite being involved in a couple of incidents, neither of which were his fault.

The Steven A. Bagen Super Late Models will have this Friday off before being back in action on August 8. That race will be a tune-up for the Florida Pro Series event the following week.

In action this week will be the WIND-FM Modifieds, Diamond H Air & Heat Sportsman, K-Country Street Stocks and Four Cylinder Stocks.
