Steve Weaver, Jr. Takes Late Model Sportsman Win at Hialeah Speedway
by Marty Little

HIALEAH, Fla. - Veteran Steve Weaver, Jr used his front row starting position to good advantage and paced all 25 laps to notch the victory in Saturday night's late model sportsman feature event at Hialeah Speedway.

Weaver got a nice jump on the initial green flag and despite several restarts he was never seriously challenged throughout. Point leader Danny Maddox claimed runner-up money ahead of Greg Kaouk, Gary McGoron and Tim Shaffner.

Dodge mounted Fred Schenk paced the street stock 25 lap run for the first 22 laps but a bobble allowed point leader Sean Bulaskas to sneak past on the bottom side for the score. Schenk recovered for second spot in front of Tony Barreca, Bubba Martone and T.C. McElyea.

Mini stock action saw an evening sweep for Bill Calder and his Ford Mustang for his first win this season. Jim Miner gave chase but settled for second money ahead of Dave Shull, Tommy Styer and Frank Rios.

Fastest qualifier Mike Powers dominated the special 50 lap cyclone run as powered to the lead on lap 17 and never looked back. John Pettit was second in the 33 car field with Tony Crowder, Bob Regula and Victor Leo rounding out the top five runners.

Richard Crisafulli was the best of the super mini cup racers with Eryk Hardwick second and Peter Lloyd third.

The father-son team of Tony and Jonathan Barreca won the special 10 lap Father's Day event.
