David Frohlich Wins First Time Super Late Model Feature at New Smyrna Speedway
by Jane Smith

Samsula, Fla (May 17, 2003) Last year David Frohlich had a very special Crew Chief and friend who told him, "it is not if you win but when you win." That came true Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway as David Frohlich took his first win in the #22 Super Late Model. His friend and our's, Pete Orr, was there for that win, smiling down from heaven at New Smyrna Speedway.

Chris Fontaine sat on the pole for the Super Late Model feature but it was David Frohlich who jumped to the early lead followed by Fontaine, B.J. McLeod, Wayne Parker, and David Rogers.

McLeod was able to pass Fontaine and take second as David Rogers passed Parker and took fourth and next Fontaine for third. It then became the Frohlich, McLoed, Rogers battle.

On lap 10, Scott Reeves brought out the yellow and only caution when he spun in turns 3 and 4. Frohlich held strong on the restart and maintained his lead with B.J. McLeod, Rogers, Fontaine and Parker close behind.

Rogers and McLeod did some great side-by-side racing, never touching, never bumping each other. Rogers was finally able to get the TM Ranch nose up on McLeod and take over the second spot with McLeod falling to third. Rogers then set his eye on Frohlich.

Frohlich, who saw that famous #11 coming fast, never faulted. He held off the charge and took his first ever Super Late Model win at New Smyrna Speedway. Following Frohlich to the checkered was David Rogers, B.J. McLeod, Wayne Parker and Chris Fontaine.

After the races were over, Frohlich said, "I was thankful for David racing me clean. Alot of guys would have just knocked me out of the way for a win but not David." And if there was ever a beaming face, David Frohlich could have lite up the sky with his.

David Rogers took the heat win.

Mark Vandevender had the pole for the Open Wheel Modified race but it was Bobby Blake who jumped to the lead on the green followed by Vandevender, Matt Wheeler, David Hite, and Dave Labeau.

On lap 9, Jim Coverdale and Dave Riley brought out the caution when they spun at the bottom of turn 4 next to the pit road entrance. Both were fine and able to continue.

Blake held the point on the restart with Vandevender, Wheeler, Hite and Labeau in the top five. On lap 11, when running fifth, Hite begins to slide backwards giving over the fifth place spot to John Zidek. Hite settled in the seventh place spot.

Blake took the checkered followed by Mark Vandevender, Matt Wheeler, Dave Labeau, and John Zidek.

Mark Vandevender won the heat race.

Tim "Missileman" McPhail had the pole for the Mini Stock feature and quickly jumped to the lead on the green followed by David Castello, Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulipus, Rex Christensen, and Bob Delmastro.

Castello, the 2002 Mini Stock Champion, took the lead from McPhail and set sail for a win. Castello was able to hold the point until Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulipus put the pedal to the medal and finally made the pass stick and took the lead on the last lap.

Castello and Vulipus gave the crowd quite a show in some very close side-by-side racing action which they were loving since racing is close action. Vulipus took the checkered followed by David Castello, Tim "Missileman" McPhail, Rex Christensen, and Bob Delmastro.

Shawn Reiss of Palm Beach is the newest member of the New Smyrna Speedway Mini Stock class. Reiss, who has been racing on dirt and sometimes Hialeah Speedway, will be driving every Saturday to join the fun. If you have a Mini Stock and want a good place to race and some great guys to race with, try New Smyrna Speedway.

David Castello took the heat win.

The Mini Cups also joined in the racing fun with Dan Suggs on the pole for their 20 lap feature. Suggs jumped to the early lead on the green followed by Wendy Kash, Doug Smith, Terry Tullis, and Donny Saxon. From then on, it was a battle for all top five spots.

Smith took over second with Kash third. But Kash came back and retook second putting Smith back to third. Kash then set her sights on the leader Snuggs and was able to make the pass and take over the lead.

Once Kash had the point, there was no stopping the girl now. She held on and took the checkered followed by Doug Smith, Terry Tullis, Donny Saxon, and David Taylor.

Doug Smith took the heat win.

Mike Soukup had the pole for the Super Stock feature and jumped to the early lead over Ron Whaley, Butch Pierce, Josh Wronkowski and Rob Watford.

On lap 1 the caution is thrown as Josh Wronkowski hits the turn 4 wall and has a flying tire come off his machine. Wronkowski takes the #21 machine into the pits and was done for the night. Not what he wanted to see on "double points" night for sure.

Soukup holds the point on the restart followed by Whaley, Pierce, Amato, and Jeff Colburn. Charlie Collins now comes into the picture taking over fourth with Amato to fifth and Colburn to sixth.

Collins puts the heat on and moves from third to first with Butch Pierce on his tail for second. Whaley slides to third, Soukup fourth and Amato fifth.

Collins and Pierce put on another show for the fans as they battle side-by-side, Pierce high, Collins low. But Collins holds strong and takes the checkered followed by Butch Pierce, Ron Whaley, Mike Amato, and Jeff Colburn.

Charlie Collins and Ron Whaley took the heat wins.

Bill Spade set on the pole for the Sportsman feature and found his hands full at the drop of the green with Earl Beckner. Beckner and Spade did some good ole fashion side-by-side action with Beckner taking the point followed by Spade, Chris Pedulat, Mike Trocki, and Dusty Downer.

On lap 3, Trocki hits the turn 2 wall and another flying tire is second at New Smyrna Speedway. Trocki is fine but his car is done for the night. On the restart, Beckner holds the point followed by Pedulat, Spade, Randy Hecker, and Dusty Downer.

Beckner holds the lead and takes the checkered over Bill Spade, Randy Hecker, Chris Pedulat and Paul Colgan. In tech, Beckner is disqualified for being light giving the win to Spade. Hecker is also disqualified. The new finishing order was Bill Spade, Chris Pedulat, Paul Colgan, Dusty Downer, and Ron Lufcy.

Paul Colgan and Earl Beckner were the heat winners.

The heat race for the Late Models was costly as Bobby Orr, Mark Smith, Don Hess, Larry Osteen, and Brian Bellaw all suffered damage. Hess and Orr were not able to race the feature but Bellaw, Smith and Osteen made repairs and ran the feature.

On the pole for the Late Model feature was David Rogers in the #5 Late Model but it was Larry Osteen who jumped to the point and lead from green to checkered over David Rogers, Tim Clark, Timmy Todd, and Brian Bellaw.

No cautions were thrown in the feature which was good since we could not afford to damage anymore of our Late Models. This class could use some more cars so if you have a Late and would like a friendly, good guy place to come and race, try the New Smyrna Speedway Late Models. They are a great bunch of guys.

Larry Osteen took the heat win.

Justin Marguand had the pole for the Strictly Stock feature but it was Teresa Trombley who jumped to the point on the green. On lap 4, the yellow was thrown as Marguand spun in turns 3 and 4. On the restart, Trombley held the point followed by Mike Wofford, Roger Benton, Steven Metts, and Nick Boley.

Roger Benton was able to move on Trombley taking over first with Trombley sliding to second. Benton held on to take the checkered followed by Teresa Trombley, Nick Boley, Steven Metts, and Justin Marguand.

Roger Benton took the heat win.

Next week, May 24, Antique Cars plus Late Models, Sportsman, Open Wheel Modifieds, Mini Stocks, Super Stocks and Strictly Stocks. The Super Late Models have the night off. Grandstands open at 6 p.m. with racing action at 8 p.m.
