Chilson & Gamble lst Wins in 2003 at VSP
Brent Chilson won his first race of the season after becoming a new dad, taking the Deland Truck Center Late Model Feature. Chilson drove his Deland Fast Lube, Your Way Graphic #99 late model full steam as he took the lead on lap 1 then checked out on the remaining field til the checkered flag was thrown. Rod Burton, Paul George, David Clegg, Joe Kump, Scott Thompson, Ro Ho Sims battled wheel to wheel, 3 wide, bumper to bumper for position. Lapped traffic didn't bother Chilson as he glided through it with ease giving him an advantage over his tough competitors who were running full throttle, side by side, giving VSP fans a great race to watch. The new dad took the checkered with Burton, Clegg, George & Kump never letting up on each other for the top 5 positions. The Action Performance Street Stock Feature was won by Todd Ponce with Joey Haslauer & George Lane only inches away. Lane took the lead on lap 1 with Trevor Gamble, Ponce, Shane Williams, Paul Shead battling side by side, bumping and grinding against each other for position. Lane's held off competetors through several restarts until lap 15. Ponce with Haslauer on his bumper went extremely low on the inside line of Lane giving them the advantage to pass. Lane pulled down on their bumpers as the top 3 ran away for the remaining field. Ponce took the checkered with Haslauer & Lane next to him inches apart. Travis Gamble won his 1st Speedway Pull-N-Save Hobby Stock A-Main in 2003. Gamble captured the lead on lap 1 as the entire 24 car field ran 3 wide, 8 deep, bouncing off each other and nobody willing to give as they fought for positions. Gamble used the high & low side of the track to keep the hard charging Dennis North, Richard Price, Joe Belkey, Bill Littell,David Kinsey behind him as they ran side by side, bumping and grinding for the top position. On lap 2 a caution flag was thrown as 12 competitors fighting for position entangled in turn 3. There were no injuries but lots of damage to the cars as sheet metal was everywhere.On the restart, 7 more cautions were thrown before lap 6 was completed, changing the 20 lap feature to 12 laps due to expired time. Gamble held tight onto the lead as North fought his team mate Price along with Belkey Kinsey & Oldaker door handle to door handle giving it all they had for a chance at the top spot. Gamble took checkered flag with North, Belkey Price and Kinsey on his side producing a flying V formation across the start/finish line bringing fans to their feet. David Showers won the Speedway Pull-N-Save Hobby Stock B-Main after arriving late and missing his opportunity to run in the A-Main feature. Showers who was celebrating his birthday started in the back of the pack in a 15 car field, ran full throttle until he captured the lead on lap 7. Top Ten: 1) David Showers #54 2) Jimmy Heffner #01 3) Pete Pollock #87 4) Keith Briggs #09 5) Kenny Campbell #c9 6) Mitchell McKinnon #45 7) Craig Sutton #77 8) No-Name #00 9) Shannon McConnell #5 10) Dave Mowery #62

Mike Ponce won his 1st race in 2003 taking The Certified Auto World Mini Stock Feature. Ponce took lead over Bobby Richardson, Rick Wilson, Mark Paterniti, Drew Smith, Donnie Ashford, Charlie MacNichol, Ryan Vansickle who were battling aggressively behind him. The top 8 drivers switched positions, ran bumper to bumper, 3 wide the entire race. A caution flag on lap 18 bunched up the hard charging tough field of competitors onto Ponce's bumper. Ponce started the restart running fast and steady, high & low, as he had no breathing room between him and his competitors until the checkered was thrown. Mark Reiter took his 3rd win for 2003 in the Pure Stock Feature. Reiter took the lead from Bruce Buie on lap 4 and never looked back until the checkered flag was thrown. The remaining field Shawn Pawlak, Rick Picard, Justin Dixon, John Blood, Melissa Smith, Rodney Wright, battled nose to nose, bumper to bumper, bouncing off each other fighting for position. Reiter took the checkered as the battle for 2nd got intense with Pawlak, Blood & Picard running 3 wide bouncing off each other. The three came across with Picard on the inside, Blood in the middle, Pawlak on the outside inches apart. Blood edged out Pawlak for 2nd but the two touched in the heat of the battle causing Pawlak to flip after taking the checkered on the front straight away. Driver and car were fine and Pawlak still held onto 3rd.
