Smokin Joe Boyds Persistence takes AACS Race
By RickAnges

Joe Boyd has made many laps around the high banks of DeSoto Speedway over the years taking several big wins at the track, but one win has eluded him and that was a checkered flag in the All American Challenge Series.

Boyd has been close several times but either had mechanical woes or was in the wrong place at the wrong time that kept him from the winners circle.

Most drivers would have given up and moved on to something else but not this quiet man from Riverview Florida. Smokin Joe's dedication and persistence paid off dominating race #3 of the young AACS season.

Jeff Scofield was the fast qualifier over the field of 19 Super Late Models. The roll of the die inverted the first 4 rows putting Boyd on the point with James Glover on the outside. When the green dropped it was Glover who jumped out to the early lead. Boyd stayed in Glovers tire tracks during the early part of the race running conservatively and saving his tires and brakes for the later stages of the event.

Behind the leaders Scofield and Dave Pletcher made their way through the pack settling into third and fourth. Boyd was eventually able to get under Glover and take the lead, which he never would relinquish. Glover meanwhile was stuck in the high groove and clipped the wall. Glover eventually had to retire his ride.

Boyds machine just got better and better on long green flag runs. On several restarts after cautions Scofield tried to get under the leader but Boyds mount was just to strong. Pletcher was running a strong third but began smoking in the later stages of the race and was black-flagged into the pits. Repairs were made to the veterans car and the points leader was able to salvage a 7th place finish.

But it was Joe Boyds night and he cruised to his first win in AACS. Following Boyd across the stripe in second was Scofield. Third went to Chad Allman, fourth was Johnny Jackson and fifth went to Billy Bigley Jr.
